  • Christmas?

    Hello all!
DH and I will be unable to go to my parent's house for Xmas (scheduling + airfare = no go), and instead I am looking to rent a cabin for 2-3 nights close to our area.

I'd like it to have a kitchen.
I'd like it to be close to the mountains/in the mountains.
    Must take dogs (2).

    Resort or area suggestions?

I have no clue, but that sounds like a really great plan for when you can't make it "home." Good luck!!!!!

I think Big Bear or Lake Arrowhead would be the obvious choice. A lot of people own cabins up there and rent them out when they aren't using them. Might be a little popular that time of year with skiers? I'm not sure.

I've never used either site, but I have heard good things about homeaway.com and vrbo.com for finding rentals. You could also keep an eye on craigslist.

Mammoth is nice too, but it'd be a lot further to drive. And even more popular with skiers.

Crap--I read L.A. as Louisiana and was going to suggest Branson...

But, check out VBRO.com--our family has rented cabins through them twice and they were AWESOME! You tend to get a great deal and the cabins are usually nicer since they are owned by families and not resorts.

          Happy Cabining!

Adrianne we were just in Big Bear for three nights and stayed at the Pine Knot Guest Ranch. It was a 5 minute walk to the village, dog friendly, just a great place. They had about eight cabins, way less crowded than some of the other resorts we drove by. The cabins were really nice, More like nice hotel suites, but then when I think cabins I think no electricity or running water! These had central heat/air, fireplace, jacuzzi tubs, kitchenettes (fridge and microwave). Would have been romantic if not for DS and the fact that DH was sick, lol!

Yeah, I would suggest Lake Arrowhead. It's closer than Big Bear by about 45 minutes, so if you get car sick it's really not a long drive up the mountain. Once you're there, you can go on to Big Bear the next day or just stay by the Lake. Also, now with the 210 Fwy open all the way to the base of the mountain, it takes only a little over an hour from Downtown LA (or an hour and a half from the Valley). Many places are accepting dogs this year because of the recession limiting the number of vacation renters. Just Google any real estate company (i.e. Re/Max or Keller Williams) in Lake Arrowhead or Big Bear, and they almost all handle vacation rentals.

Whatever you choose to do, I'm sure it will be fun. And possibly better than our situation of having to juggle 9 different events over 3 days, not to mention the first Christmas with our new baby.

I have a friend from Ojai, and the area around there is absolutely beautiful. The place as a whole is known for its spas, though, so it may only be worth checking out if you plan on visiting some spas while you're there. (Which I'm doubting, given that it'll be Christmas time...)
