Perks of having DH as a resident!

So the schedule sucks, he is never home, he studies and reads all the time and gets paid diddly squat. BUT there is A perk - getting in and out of the ER in 1 hour 15 min. WOO HOO! I am a happy camper tonight. DS cut his eye pretty bad having....a temper tantrum (slid out of his seat at dinner and cut eye on side of table). DH had to work nights so we followed him to work. He called ahead to the ER. They had a bed waiting for DS. They did their stuff and voila! An hour later we were in the drive through at McDonald's getting a milk shake. Now that is what I call service!

Ouch! Glad he got out quickly. Is this the same DS that had the "toothbrush" incident? If so, the poor kid seems as accident prone as I am!

We had an emergency department trip a little while ago, too.

DD2 wanted to peel an orange, but the rind was tough. Instead of asking for help, she grabbed a knife. She sliced herself pretty neatly. Thankfully, DH had his sports medicine bag here at the house with all of the necessary goodies to do the job. Except it ALL expired 4 years ago. So, off the ER we went.

5 stitches and 45 minutes later, DD2 had some lovely stitches and DH was just about in tears after sewing up one of his own.

We've had a couple of ER runs where DH has called ahead and we've received the royal treatment.

Last year I broke my foot running into our bedpost (OW!!!). I paged DH in tears and he had my mom drive me in to his ER. Even before I had walked through the ER doors I had two nurses come up to me and say: "Hi Mrs. O, we're going to take you right back". I didn't have to fill out paperwork or anything. I was in and out in less than half an hour....and that was with X-Rays, getting my foot fitted for a boot, crutches, etc.

I remember when I was pregnant with my DD and worried about early cramping/bleeding, I sat in an ER in a different city for 3 hours before they took me back! Yes, it's way different when your hubby is a doc.

The other ER trip we had was just this past June when my daughter had a severe allergic reaction to something at her school. Her eyes were completely swollen shut and yellow! I took her to DH's ER and again, they got her right back and we were out of there within 45 minutes.

DH says that with all that we put up with in terms of his schedule and being on-call so much, one of the perks is his ability to have us taken care of if there is an emergency.

We haven't had any ER trips around here in a long time (knock on wood!) but it's assuring to know that if we do, we won't be waiting around the ER for hours on end.

I didn't get this perk! Maybe it's because I'm an adult and wasn't bleeding? But I was in the ER a few weeks ago and had to wait 7 hrs in the middle of the night! My poor DH waited with me and went to work the next morning!

I haven't used the ER yet (knock on wood!), but DH got me an appt. w/ a really nice sports med attending for this Wednesday (lots of ankle issues, etc.) and this person was apparently booked solid for the next 2 months.

DH says he just asked very politely, and the attending immediately put me down on his off hours - I'm really grateful, it's so nice of him to consider me on his non-office hours.

Was it at his hospital? Did they realize he was house staff? Katherine isn't kidding -- it's one of the ONLY perks, you have to make sure you use it. My dh isn't one to flaunt the Dr. status (not on checks, bills, address labels ... none of that), but in an emergency dept., you've got to pipe up.

Amen to that!! When dh has had to take one of the kiddos he always just goes through the back door.

If you waited 7 hours, it had nothing to do with you. Most likely, the ED was on single coverage and someone (or more than one) was either coding or they were hit with multiple traumas. Triage still comes into play at a certain extent. The biggest tip is - have your spouse phone first and speak with the attending. They'll let you know if they're swamped, and you'll at least walk in knowing you're going to wait a good long while.

Yes it was his hospital. He told them he worked there when we went in, because we asked if we still had to pay the full copay, and we did I don't know why we had to wait so long!
