Step III

Aren't you just supposed to show up with a pencil for step III? I think DW studied for it, but that was either before intern year or just after. Can't remember exactly as I was either studying for the bar exam, or buried in work. Our training years have all just blended into a blur...

No moonlighting for DW. Not even sure if it is allowed, but she put her foot down. Her program already consumes most of her time.

Step III is the general one that is not specialty specific right? The cost for all of these tests amazes me. As an attorney, my firm paid for my bar exams. I am still surprised that the majority of programs do not pay for these tests since they need their residents to pass it in order for them to get the most from their slaves As a RAD resident, he has to pay for his membership to ABR along with his yearly tests that I think are north of $500. Since Step III, we've paid for physics AND written boards.

DH's program does allow moonlighting, and his rotation schedule would allow probably at least 2-3x a month to do it. It's really promising looking, as of right now (no kids, etc) -- Step III for him is just the third part of licensing here in CA, and it needs to be done before the last year of his residency. I think he's going to take a huge chunk of paycheck next payperiod, and just "do it."

BTW Jenn, I too am just fine using tax $ to pay for armed forces medical training.
I was just surprised about the price tag of the test in general, because DH usually has handled that separately in the past. All my testing has never amounted to that much money

Hehe, that's what DH said about it, too. I believe it went along the lines of "You study for months for Step I, weeks for Step II, and show up with a pencil for Step III." He took it during his intern year. I know he did study for it a little, but almost never at home. He just used his down time in the call room.

Ummm... did he tell you how much the CA licence is Adrianne? THAT is sticker shock. We had to borrow to pay it. It was even worse for us because they invoiced us for the full amount, not the residents reduced rate. Beware!! Now 4 months later we still have not received the refund for the overpayment. Gah!!!!

DW is in the same boat, Rad Onc requires physics, written and oral boards. Hopefully the oral boards are paid for by her future empolyer.

Looks like our tax refunds will be going to pay his Step III and License. :/
I told him yesterday, and he said something like $700-$800 for the license - did R have to pay more?
I hope you get your cash back soon - that's just terrible how slow moving they are about it all.

the CA license is crazy expensive. And if you ever want to follow up on why they haven't sent you your passport back, you call a number, are told to leave voicemail, and then told after the prompt that the VM box is full, and then click, you're booted off the line. Ugh!

I'm so sorry to hear about the delay in getting your refund. CA is so stinking expensive that one would hope they'd be faster with these kinds of things...

Indiana is the state of choice for a lot of the military residents and interns because it's cheap and they don't require CMEs (The military requires CMEs, though).

I think last time he had to renew his license it was all of $250.

His Written boards for Child Neurology were like $1800 and the orals were about the same. We had to front the money and the Army reimbursed us after he'd taken them.

Yeah around $800 is right. $400 ish for application and about the same again for the license fee for docs in training. We were invoiced the post training amount of $1300 total. I have to keep calling them (me of course, not DH). A couple weeks ago we finally got a check.......for $22!!!!! Lol. So I was back on the phone explaining it all over again. They suck!

DH took Step III at the end of his first year so he could moonlight beginning in July of second year. That moonlighting moolah comes in handy.

We paid *I think* around $900 to start the process. We had to start the process before we even had a job in CA to be considered by any of the groups dh was applying to. The thing that sucks is dh never completed the process b/c he took a job else where. We had that much saved up, so it went down the drain. B/c dh was applying for a license to get a job he didn't qualify for the resident rate, b/c he wasn't a resident in the state of CA.

Over the last year, we have shelled out for two medical licences (in different states), DEA licence, PALS, and today DH writes the $1200 check for written boards, which are not until next August, oh and a $200 application fee for credentialling for his new job.

As far as I know he will be reimbursed for PALS and the application fee. He was too late to ask for reimbursement for his licence, I don't want to know how much we lost on that! He carried the forms around in his bag for 6 months
