  • November Check-in!

Just thought I'd start a thread so everyone can tell us how things are going?

Things are GREAT here - DH is finally home and we've survived his three away rotations! I cannot believe how quickly this year is flying by!

One month down, 47 months to go for DrK's residency. So far so good. I'm off to FL next week for 5 fun filled days of office politics, law school reunion, baby shower, dental work, etc. I'm exhausted just thinking about it. After that, I'm grounded until Spring.

#2 should be here any day. DH only has 2 week nights of call and one weekend this month because they stacked his call early and late in the quarter for the baby. We leave 3 weeks from Tuesday to visit my family for Thanksgiving - YAY! And yes, we're nuts and are driving 8 hours each way with a newborn and a toddler

          Update:

          SSDD (Same Sh*t, Different Day)

Just playing the waiting game for official word that the good dawkter will be heading back to DC for a year. I cannot even begin to describe the underwhelmedness that I feel about this particular wrinkle in attendinghood. Oh well, not my career. (and no, dude and I will not be going. The dude has had nothing but disruptions in his life- some semblance of stability is key. We were talking about it with him today after he announced that he did not want daddy to go far away ever again. I asked him what about if daddy went to DC for a while and then came home and my little world traveler said, 'No, that's just two airplanes, mommy. That's not far.")

In other news, my dad has a pace-maker installed tomorrow. I have a theory that once his heart is beating more than 22 times a minute (!) he will probably have a lot more energy. (he says "but I feel good now!")

It's poker night tonight so I'm enjoying the peace and quiet- a little Beethoven, some red wine, no blaring TV. I'm about to go read a book.

DH is traveling for the next two weeks in a row, so I'm on my own with the kiddos. I think the only time it's really going to suck is when I'm trying to do dinner/bath/bedtime by myself, otherwise I'm kinda looking forward to having a string of evenings to myself...

My parents are planning on picking up the boys the Saturday before Thanksgiving and taking them to their house, and then DH and I will drive down to meet them in Chicago (where they have a condo) on Wednesday and then we'll spend Thanksgiving in Chicago (we want to take the kids to the parade). But count 'em ... that's FIVE DAYS without my kids. I'm giddy just thinking about what I'll do with all that free time, I CAN'T WAIT!!!

I honestly am just holding my breath at the moment. We had two quite wonderful month on the children's rotation and J starts his Trauma rotation today. We will also get the schedule for this month, today. So I have no idea what is in store yet. I have a feeling our luck has run out. We were spoiled in Sept and Oct. Very very very spoiled.

Today is my last day pulling two jobs. Yeay for saying goodbye to poop pickup (dog day care). Wednesday I have my first day with the students.

Well, today is the first day of a new rotation...consults at the "less busy" hospital where he trains. So far, I am optimistic that this month will be better. Last month was cath service at the "busy" hospital - it sucked. Glad that month is OVER until next year and glad I didn't go into labor during that month. That would've been ugly.
I am 37 weeks this thursday (I had DS at 37.0 wks) so although I have mentally prepared myself (and packed bags, etc) for a 37 week delivery, I don't feel like there's much labor activity going on. In fact, my BH contractions have decreased these last couple weeks. Hmmm. Maybe I will be eating turkey and pumpkin pie pregnant after all...
DS is doing well. Loves preschool. I have been really trying to spend a lot of time with him the last few weeks, enjoying being a mom of one for a little longer...

DH is on Women's Health this month, so there will be a lot of call re: L&D.
I am preparing my very last graduate school research paper, and compiling material for my written exams in the specialty I've chosen. Looking forward to graduating (hopefully! yikes!) from my program in December.

DH is on his two month break for interviews. I seriously don't know what to do know that he is home all day when not interviewing! But we are enjoying it.

DH started his trauma rotation last night at Shock Trauma in Baltimore. We all drove down together on Friday and Oscar and I will be staying with him until the middle of the month. The apt is okay though we had some fridge trouble that killed my whole foods grocery shopping from Sat but seems to be resolved now. Dh's schedule is very strange - lots of different types of 'days'. We are still working on getting his hand fellowship apps out. I mailed out a few today and got to visit the lovely baltimore hood to get to the post office. There is a bar next to the post office called 'bunz'. Classy!! So far everyone I've had contact with has been very nice. We went to the inner harbor Sunday and took the water taxi to Fells Point and back. I'm looking forward to exploring a bit more and going to the aquarium.

I updated my Mom calender today and was pleased to notice that DH will be "totally" gone for only 10 days this month, as opposed to the 17 nearly in a row that he had last month... Every night he's home before 8 is a chance for the girls to actually see him, and we may soon have some of those again. Right now he was supposed to end at 4 but is "finishing notes" now at 6:30 and I don't expect him anytime soon. Amazing how our perceptions differ about when he's "done"...
I've got one recovering 8-year-old swine flu victim and one upcoming by the way the 3-year-old is acting tonight. So far the other 3 of us are feeling ok. With my asthma already bad lately I'm really hoping to stay healthy and not up my cortisone, . We shall see.
We've got plans with friends for Thanksgiving AND I'll be off to a seminar BY MYSELF in December, so I'm pretty excited about that.

I think he's finished up his fellowship interviews today. Was asked by one of today's interviewers why he was having to interview, and the other told him it must be a formality. I guess he's set for his fellowship.

He's on neurology this week and next. Only one call night these next two weeks. We get to go out for my b-day Saturday night (with my best friend and her hubby). He is on call Thanksgiving.

Kids are great. Mom is back from Panama (just got back today). We all made it through the 6 month anniversary of my abuelita's death on Oct 25th. Thank God for friends.

Unfortunately, a friend from church is now going through a similar experience with her elderly father in the hospital -- waiting for him to pass. I am now strong enough though to be there for her and spent time with her family at the hospital Friday and Saturday.

DH just started week 2 of his 8 week surgery rotation. The first week wasn't half bad and this week and next will be in Ophtho which he's beyond excited about. I'm really bummed though because not only is he working on Thanksgiving, but he's also on call, so that's totally derailed my plans to host Thanksgiving this year.

Good news is this rotation is his last of his "3rd year" (he's off track due to the PhD) so he'll have a whole six weeks off come mid December. Knowing he's got Xmas/New Years off helps me cope with missing out on Thanksgiving.
