Thanks guys! I'll look into Canon! That'll be easier, since I've already got one!

I'm back to using a Canon Powershot which I love -- this one is the SX20 IS. It's not as small as many P&Ss but it's got a killer zoom and full manual mode which was important to me. It's also got a swivel screen so you can hold the camera up above your head or down low and still see what you're aiming at. I've never had a problem with shutter lag on my Powershot (that's the technical term for how fast it actually takes the picture once you push the button) but you'll never find a P&S that will respond as fast as your dSLR, that's just the difference in the mechanisms.

I knew there had to be a name for that! Thanks! Well darn... Maybe I should go back to carrying around a 35mm. (Believe it or not, that's what I did until I got my Rebel in '09 because the shutter lag bugged me so much!)

Swing by Best Buy or Sears or whatever's near that has a decent sized P&S display and click a few buttons, see if anything feels responsive enough. If you have noticeable shutter lag on your current P&S then there's probably something out there that's better. My Powershot will suffice for most everything except maybe my dogs, but they're super speedy runners

Bumping this up - anyone bought a point and shoot recently? I was going to get a DSLR but I've decided I'm just not ready for something that big. The Powershot 280SX is the updated version of what my FIL has. Its on Amazon for $249. I think I may just get that. Anyone?

I got the one you recommended from you FIL, and I love it. I'm still not used to the delay in taking the picture from when I push the button (spoiled by DSLR), but I actually use the Powershot more often these days. I'm in love with the function that takes a small video clip with each picture and compiles them into a single video. It's so much fun to watch!

LadyM, I'm the opposite. I can't even use the point and shoot anymore bc I can't stand the delay in taking pictures! Just annoys the crap out of me with the toddler. Although it would be nice to carry something smaller!

Are there any point and shoots that take more "instant" photos?

That is a really good point T&S which is why I've also considered the Canon Rebel SL1 - their new small DSLR.

Is Best Buy really still the best place to go see/feel cameras? It seems like camera shops are not around anymore.

Yes, I'd love to try out the new Rebel! It is nice to have a pocket sized camera that's better/faster than my phone, though, and I don't think it's that small. There are just so many situations where it was too hard to bring the DSLR, and I'd skip taking pictures or use my phone.

Cheri, I'd try Amazon or Sam's. They seem to have slightly better prices.

I probably will order it online but I'd like to go to an actual store and play with them. My other issue with DSLR is that I need Image Stabilization and I know that is in the lens in newer lenses but we have some old lenses I could use if I could find a body with it, which I don't believe exists. I think I will probably buy a new point and shoot before R's birthday and then ask for a DSLR for Christmas.

So there is a new breed of camera out now called a micro four thirds system or a mirrorless camera -- Sony, Fuji, Olympus, Panasonic, Canon, Nikon, they all make one now. It's close to the size and weight of a point and shoot but it comes with interchangeable lenses and a lag time that rivals dSLRs (i.e. basically non-existent). It's a newer system but it's already being heralded as the next big thing. I know of some pros who have started shooting almost exclusively with them. And you can get one for as little as a few hundred bucks. I bought a point and shoot recently but was under serious budgetary restrictions, otherwise I would have gone with a mirrorless. If you have a healthy P&S budget you may want to check them out.
