Just be aware that repairs can be more expensive and take a long time because the parts are still foreign. My friend had a minor accident in her Jetta that required some undercarriage work--took THREE months to get it back. It's nice having a "domestic" car (Taurus) because the parts are always in stock. My dad does all the work on our cars and he'll only buy domestic for that reason.

We have had 3 beetles, 3 Jettas, 1 Rabbit and 1 Toureg. No, not because they have died - because we have have sometimes done the lease option, sold it to a family member, bught one for my mom and had to get a bigger car.

Out of all those cars only one beetle was a lemon (it was the first year they came out) and the dealership finally tired of me bringing it in and replaced it with another. I then traded that one for a diesel and my little 03 is still running strong (knock on wood) after 63000 miles.

I heart VW.

I drive a Civic, and I love it. I've driven Fords my entire life, and they've been great, but there's just something about my Honda that I love.
Having said all that, the next car we have decided to purchase will probably be a Subaru Outback (used). When it comes to DH's "future truck" (omg), he wants a Toyota, and I'll be on board with that too.

When I got my Mazda wagon, we looked at the Passat diesel. A friend had one and she loved it but said she had a lot of trouble with it. If I was getting one now, I'd definitely consider the diesel Jetta wagon.... But really I LOVE my Mazda wagon!! (first Mazda I've ever had - previously a Toyota/Honda girl.)

I grew up with a rabbit from the 70's. That thing lasted forever! Dh and I got a vw golf in 2001. It handled great and was very cute but we had electrical issues, back breaks wore out at 10k miles, the spoiler tore up from the road and had to be removed and there were a few other issues. It wasn't as rock solid as my parents vw but that was many years ago. We also had problems with the dealership honering the warranty they sold us. If it wasn't for that I probably would have had a better experience. Not sure I would purchase one again. We sold it when we moved back to nyc and I still miss it a bit. It really handled great & had good response (it was a stick shift).

Seriously, though - buy a copy of Consumer Reports and read what they have to say. They are really pretty spot-on!

I would say since you are a ways away from the end of training, to maybe get a car that is known for being reliable so that you aren't replacing it or spending a lot on repairs!

We had several VWs -- a bug, vanagon, and as an adult I had a Passat.
I really wanted a Eurovan but they discontinued it before we were done with training. I'm glad now that it didn't work out -- we need an SUV for the snow where we live now.

They all were great for us.

So I went and test drove a Saab today. I really like it, so now i am trying to go through the pros and cons. Anyone own a Saab?

Never had a Saab but a good friend had one when we lived in CA. The only thing I remember about it was that it was expensive to get fixed and with their ownership up in the air right now I could see how that could be an issue.

Really? Could you PM where to find this info because I'd really like to know. It is by far the most we have ever paid for a car and I need to know if it we should consider ditching it. It has been awesome so far (it is the 07 diesel) but now I'm thinking DH may not have done enough research.

Well the salesman said (take that for what you will) that they have started making 2010 and is for some reason there is no more saab after this, GM is going to make is available for service at the Cadillac dealerships. It has a 3yr 36K all services included and the warranty is for 4yr or 50K miles. So I have no idea what to do, to many choices...

When doing research for our current car, I also came across poor reviews for VW Touareg. I think it was in the magazine that they do specifically for cars by Consumer Reports.
