DH and I are going to go to the school-sponsored event (it's at the Signature Room in the Hancock Building!)
In the car the other day:
DH: My parents probably won't come for Match Day because it's in the middle of the week (he has a brother still in HS), but they'll be the next day for sure.
Me: Why the next day?
DH: For graduation...
Me: Ummm...that's in May

At least graduation will be in Lincoln Center... and will also not be the day after match day.Back in the Midwest with my PGY-2 ortho DH and putting my fashion degree to good use.

I think it kind of depends how big the class is and how much $$ student affairs has for the match day ceremony.
I have been to sit down lunches held in the ballroom of a hotel where spouses were invited and I have also been to a ceremony held in the school auditorium where anyone/everyone was welcomed.
Later, the class will go and party. At one institution, the rent a charter bus and spouses are invited.
When DH matched, it was in the courtyard of the school and anyone was invited. Only I went but had our parents waiting by the phone. All then went their separate ways to have lunch and I do not think that there was any party afterwards.
What gets me is the bringing money for the money pot. Our friend's DH forgot his and she had to frantically go search for an ATM to get some before his name was called. Finally - we are finished with training! Hello real world!!

At DF's school, everyone got to pick up their envelopes at around 11:45 AM-ish and the dean of the med school told us when it was officially 12 PM. Those were the longest 15 minutes of my life, holding that damn envelope and not being able to open it. And the roar that went through the room at 12:01 PM was something I will never forget.Event coordinator, wife and therapist to a peds attending

And kmc, I think match day is better than graduation. Sure, it'll be cool to get a picture of him in his robe and hood, but the actual ceremony will likely not be that interesting. It's not like art school where there are performances of modern dance and speeches by Oscar winning playrights. The keynote will likely be very impressive, but I doubt I (as a non-science person) will really care about what s/he has to say...
Match Day, on the other hand will be more exciting and suspenseful. It's what you'll talk about years from now. This post is full of match stories; I doubt we'd see the same if the topic was graduation.
Also, everybody has graduations but only medicine has the match. This is a unique part of the process... That stresses us out and we complain about endlessly. So the actual day is cause for celebration. And exhaling.
Support for graduation would be nice, but support for Match Day is necessary, whether the result is good, bad, or so-so. In short, good choice.
