I don't have an SLR, but I love my camera. It is a set below the SLR but has a lot of the same features and abilities. When doing research to pick our camera (and we did a lot) this one got really awesome reviews. A lot of high end photographers said that they use this one when they need something portable - it was their solution to a "point-and-click" need. We bought it with the idea that we *may* upgrade to an SLR in the future if I learned to use this camera first (I am still learning a lot). It has only one lens upgrade and you cannot use anything but the on-board flash. Other than that, I think it does a really great job.

We have the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ28. We got a package at Costco with a case and memory card for $285 about a year ago. I would look into it if you think you want something to "learn" on and aren't ready to spend $700 - $1000 until you know how interested your DD really is.

PM me if you want to know more.

Hi Ellen-- don't know if I've met you before. I'm super-bad about checking in with the introduction forum.

We actually have this camera! I like it, but it doesn't work the best in low-light settings. I'm finding that my problem is our house has very little natural light (it's a townhouse). Things will get better when the kids and I can get outside with some decent lighting!!! This camera did work TONS better than the point and shoot I have at our last Disney trip, though. Really appreciated the super zoom...

My DD will need an SLR, and I will probably contact the teacher as soon as I know who it will be to see what all she's going to need. Probably we won't be buying it for a few months still, so I have some time to do some research and save some nickles (and she has time to babysit to pay her part!!). I really want to encourage her in this photography phase, though. I think she does have a good eye! I love seeing her photos compared to mine. The reason she got into photography at all was because we implemented mandatory family outings (!!!) and she whined and moaned the whole way until she started bringing her point and shoot along. Now she would rather be sleeping than going on *mandatory family outings* but at least she has something to do other than ask me when we're leaving every 5 minutes.

I think with all the photographers we have on this site it would be fun to have a little expo! Anyone want to post your pictures? I'd love to see some...

I have this camera and I LOVE it! (Actually, I'm on my 2nd Lumix, same model, because I left my 1st one on top of DH's car and he drove off with it on top. Needless to say, it crashed to the ground.) It really is a great alternative to a DSLR.

Here are some picts I've taken with my Lumix: http://www.wix.com/melfitz/portfolio (Most of the picts were taken with the Lumix. A few were taken with a Sony Cybershot I used to have until DH dropped my camera into the mud. In his defense, he was trying to catch my DD who fell into a river because she was looking at a caterpillar.)

See- now those are gorgeous photos. And you took them using the Lumix DMC-FZ28?? I have that one, too. Just not the same results, sadly!!!

          Lovely photos! Thanks for sharing!!

I have to ask the super stupid question. What IS SLR? I just have a regular digital camera.

The big ones with lots of lenses and complicated stuff.

                I think...

I don't know what SLR stands for, though.

wow that's catchy... I can see why they use SLR instead of the long version...

I have been looking for a DSLR as well and I rely heavily on my brother's recommendations. He is does digital special effects for Disney and travels in circles that know quite a lot about such things. Upon his rec I'll be getting the Cannon T2i that should be released in a few weeks... It seems to be the biggest bang for the buck with great HiDef video... Here's a link he sent me http://ninofilm.net/blog/2010/02/23/canon-550d-review/

Wowza... I read the entire post from him. First, you have a very interesting Brother. He probably lives my daughter's dream life. Probably. Second, I watched the entire February short film. Just great!!! I loved it. Third, this camera looks super.

It seems more and more as I look into this that the real cost is in the lenses... But getting a stable body is super important. I think I've already decided on Canon as a brand (my dad has a Rebel, not sure which kind but it's been about 5 yrs since he bought it-- it's a DSLR). So, my plan is to shoot around with his camera over the summer when we are there, and have Kate play around on it, and then we'll look to buy once we know exactly what she'll need. I'm thinking a more basic (cheaper) model for her to start on, because she needs to lug it everywhere, and watching her continually drop her ipod and her cell phone just make me shudder to think what she'd do with a nice camera.

But for me... I'm in lurve. Thanks for the heads up. And thanks to your brother for writing that blog. I know I should post on his page, but given his career and skills I'm sure he could've written an uber technical piece that would have lost me at the first ISO this or that... But no, pretty straightforward. I appreciate that!!!

Oops...That's not my brother's blog, just a link he sent to me about the camera. I don't know if he knows the guy or not. But...Begin Brag: he does have an awesome job. He did a lot of animation for A Christmas Carl and special effects for Iron Man. He's about to start a new job for the house that made Legion...Evan is my go to for all things art and technology related

Too funny! I was trying to figure out what projects Disney had going on in Europe since the blog author seems to do his work out of there. anyway, it's always appreciated to have a recommendation from someone in the field!
