Severe Weather

We need rain. We've had triple digit temps, high winds, and dry lightning. The High Park fire (2nd largest in the state, near Ft. Collins) is expected to be contained in the middle of July, Waldo Canyon (CO Springs) is awful, it is just tearing through homes like a hungry beast, the fire near Boulder has a little more containment. There are several others that I have not been following as closely. We live in Denver and are not in direct danger, but several of DH's classmates childhood homes are threatened (or gone) and it is very sad. The pictures are just horrific.

I've been watching the fires in CO too. I have a couple friends there in your area as well. I'll do a rain dance for you all.

I'm not home, but according to J we had a huge crazy storm last night and our power is knocked out. From FB it looks like the power outages are pretty wide spread. I am so glad I am not there. Its supposed to be 100 again. J informed me this morning we are in need of more shabbos (sabbath) candles. I think we need some black out candles so we aren't using religious candles that burn quickly in power outage. J got to brush his teeth by flashlight this morning.

Yikes!

My parents' car temp read 117 in East Tennessee yesterday. When we arrived back in Cincinnati, the smog was so thick my eyes watered.

Last night we had 60 mile an hour winds and a storm and the temp dropped 35 degrees. Otherwise I would have bagged running this morning. It is going to be one helluva summer to train.

I can deal with bad storms. I'm used to that. What I don't like is what I just had to drive through. We've had heat index of about 105 for 2 days. I got off work and a big black storm was headed my way. Then super strong winds blew in. I nearly hit a orange construction barrel on my way home from work! The internet says we have a temp of 66. That's the fast drop in temp I've ever experienced!

Tons of down trees. Four people were killed in that storm I was posting about. I have a friend here that has big pine trees on her house 2 days before her due date. Winds were 60 MPH and in some places 90 MPH. We had no warning. The weather people SUCK out here. They said the rain would come to our area from VA. I could even tell it was going to make it here from what little I know about weather! Now every day the weather guys say there is a possible chance of storms even though there are no storm anywhere near NC. Just covering their butts.

That derecho was crazy. We got a really powerful storm ahead of the derecho, so.much.lightning. Our power went out 4 times in 10 minutes, but fortunately stayed on. We got lucky and the derecho passed about 25 miles to our south. My hometown got slammed, it is worse than Hurricane Irene last year. Lots of wind damage - trees and power lines all intertwined. 2 kids died when a tree fell on their tent immediately following the storm. My parents were without power until Monday morning, my friend and her husband got their power back this morning (out for 4 days). This is so rare for our area to have those kinds of outages. My roommate's parents still do not have power and won't until at least Friday (out for 1 week). So many road closures. On top of the heat. It has really made people in that area leery of t-storms, when they never really were before.

The power went out late Friday night and I believe the power came back on sometime sunday morning. I didn't get back in town until Sunday night (and luckily didn't have to deal with the brunt of it) and the AC didn't fully recover until Monday. There were several street lights and places around where I work in the morning that finally got power yesterday. I don't know about my afternoon job because the family took off to go stay with family in North Carolina after their power went out. I can't imagine still not having power. Its too hot.

Has anyone heard from Peggy?

Our forecast indicates a few nasty storms tomorrow evening but nothing tremendously impressive. As long as we don't get another tornado, it'll all be good!

The one about crossing a river is a joke. We live on the Mississippi and it is HUGE here, more than 30 feet deep in parts and at least a half mile across (yes, I realize this is significantly smaller than it is downriver, but it is still pretty big!) Two summers ago, an EF1 tore through town causing millions of dollars of damage. One of the streets that was hit had was literally one block over from my sister's house. We were so lucky; it landed, destroying several apartment complexes that house residents, somehow skipped the entire hospital complex (roughly a quarter mile distance across) then landed and demolished several businesses across the street from the hospital. I still get weirded out about the way the hospital was spared.
