  • The quick version:

Keep an eye on the Outlooks the Severe Storm Prediction Center provides:

    http://www.spc.noaa.gov/

Slight is enough to get storm chasers out.

    Moderate is a big deal.

High makes storm chases pee their pants and something big is likely to go down--these don't even happen every year.

View your forecast via weather.gov and read any Short Term Forecasts, Hazardous Weather Outlooks, etc. You can tell a lot of where the worrisome area will hit by the radar signature alone if the storms are discrete cells. It's harder when it is an embedded cell. Google "Supercell" "hook echo" "Rear Flank Downdraft"

Know the difference between a tornado watch & a warning. Watch=good conditions for tornadoes in the specified time period but nothing imminent. Warning=Confirmed tornado on the ground in your area or conditions are such that one could form at any time. You better be in your hidey hole.

    Hidey Holes:

    Interior closet--Good
    Interior Bathroom--Better
    Basement/Storm Shelter--Best

    Don't bother opening windows. That's a myth.

If you are in a car, the worst place you can be is under an overpass. The best place you can be is out of the car in a sturdy building. The next best is in a ditch on the ground. Definitely out of the car.

My plan (given enough warning time) is N strapped to one of us in the ergo while we hang out in the bathtub. With blankets and helmets. Helmets are a new recommendation that hasn't been given the full stamp of approval, but only because there have been no studies. It makes perfect sense to me. Flying debris is the main cause of injury in a tornado. Why wouldn't you want to protect your head?

        • If I have her address right, she is far enough North that she should be okay.

            • If it hit the elementary school 13 told me about, I'm a little worried for another medical spouse family in the area. I met them at an alumni event (she was the same major as LadyM and I at OU)--they just moved from Houston to OKC for "the job" in EM. Really nice family. When I saw them a few weeks ago, they mentioned buying a home right near the elementary school/pumpkin patch area that was supposedly hit. I hope they are okay!

                  • I'm okay. We are in the nw part of the city pretty centrally located. Probably 12+ miles from the tornado hit area.

I need to update the info sheet cause my number changed!

The tornado hit an elementary school and some kids are trapped.

I'm a broken record on this but folks, if you live in a tornado prone area buy a shelter. Ours holds 8-10 and was about $6K. Factor it in to your mortgage, it is pennies in the grand scheme of things. We have family in OK and my cousin was working in Joplin when the big tornado hit a few years back. You may never need it but if you do you will never regret that purchase.

                      • Our neighbor has a basement that we are welcome too. Most houses central in the city don't have shelters. Not sure if its due to tornados never entering that part of the city or what. It is a little comforting be surrounded by neighborhoods of 100 year old houses having never been hit.

Does anyone know if a tornado has ever hit the inner city of okc?

I'd put money on it, but it may not have been bad enough to do a lot of damage. The one like you saw today and the one in 1999 aren't common, but obviously are real!

Just because a place hasn't been hit in recent history, doesn't mean it wont be hit. Tornadoes do hit the center of cities. St. Louis and Ft. Worth are examples.

Or in the case of Moore, a recent hit (1999) doesn't mean you wont be hit again (2003) and again (today).

                                Just don't live in Moore.
