OK, my inlaws are currently driving between STL and Rolla, MO (they should be home in Rolla by 7:30 eastern time); I see on a map on weather.gov that that whole area is under tornado watch; how can I tell what to watch/pay attention to, and/or where to point them to to see what their danger is?

ETA: preferably without watching a bunch of video?

I'm watching the live stream on the internet about Oklahoma. OMG the damage and the children in the elementary school! This is just heart breaking. I hope everyone is alright. Don't we have some iMSN peeps there?

I agree about getting a shelter ASAP. It was so nice knowing we would be safe. There are tornadoes in OK that rip right through the "central closet or bathroom" without leaving anything. I believe our shelter was around $4k, built for 4-6 people. It was the kind that goes in the garage. (You can leave your car in the garage!) We'll probably get one put into our new house here eventually, even though we're not in tornado alley anymore.

New report on Plaza Towers says kids are still trapped. Some are calling it search and identify now. *shudder*
I cannot imagine.
Agapeland and Briarwood have all kids safe and accounted for.

There were 2 elementary schools. Tower Plaza was one.

The medical family I mentioned earlier is fine

Sad all around. Moore has been hit too many times. The Warren Theater was really cool and i hope it reopens. It opened when we were in college...ironically we took bets at how long it would last before another tornado came through.

I think the same thing. I would never live in Norman or Edmund either. There is plenty of cheap housing in central okc that aren't war zones. Moore is close to Tinker Airforce base but common, at least have a storm shelter if your going to chance it in a well known to be hit area.

Guys, that doesn't make logical sense. There is no real reason Moore has been hit more by large tornadoes than Norman just south of it and OKC just north of it than pure chance. It's a macabre joke now because it has happened so many times, but you are deluding yourself if you think you are safer just a few miles away.

People used to call Norman a "bubble" and then it got hit 2 years in a row.

By that logic, New Orleans, most of Houston, NYC, Miami, large chunks of California, etc. should have moved on. It's a well known hazard of living in Oklahoma--and if anything your chances of being struck by a tornado in OKC are smaller than hurricanes/earthquakes in the areas I just mentioned.

It's why the city is so dang prepared--seriously, even Dallas cannot hold a candle to the severe weather coverage and prep of OKC. It's impressive and saves lives. They had 15 minutes of notice--that is amazing.

Norman and Edmond have the best schools. Moore is okay. Like any other city most central OKC schools suck (except for small pockets) unless you are going private. That is why people live there.

Sorry--it's a pet peeve of mine. It drives me insane when people post on the Dallas City Data board "Where in DFW am I safe from Tornadoes" and then they get equally idiotic responses. The risk is essentially the same across the whole area.

Catching up on Moore - was there no warning? So very sad!

Plenty of warning - not enough storm shelters below ground. It was just one of those things -- the last 2 days, Oklahoma has seen tornadoes where the citizen were advised to either get below ground, or get into a car and basically flee southward. The last time that happened, it was 1999. Awful, awful day.
If an F5 hits your house, it doesn't matter if you're in an innermost room, or covered up - many buildings were wiped clean to the foundation. The debris cloud stretched 2 1/4 miles wide at times. You just can't wait out that kind of destruction.

So sad!
