  • Help!!! Need Tip Recommendations for Hair Cut

I'm going to get a haircut after an embarrassingly long time... And I'm going to a mid-range salon (not a Hair Cuttery, but not a super fancy place either.) They have "shampoo girls" there-- I have a friend who got a hair cut in this place a while back and she commented on that. Anyway, what do you tip the "shampoo girls" and what do you tip the stylist?

This is a place where women's haircuts start at $44.

Same here. $2 or $3 to the shampoo girl, and 20% to the actual stylist.

The only time you don't have to tip is if the owner of the salon is the person cutting your hair. When I go see my friend/haircutter in MD I usually bring her a bottle of wine or some homemade cookies.

So usually it is around 2-3 bucks but I will tell you that usually the stylist tips the shampoo /assistant girl at the end of the day . Good luck on your haircut today, that is all I did today. Haircuts and colors!! wooohoooo

I actually go to an Aveda salon here that doesn't allow tipping. Their stylists are not allowed to accept them. It's actually really nice. Apparently they are the only salon in Florida that does this, but I love it.

That is interesting Heidi... Sort of like buying a used car where the price is non-negotiable, but under the kelly blue book.

I ended up tipping $2 to the shampoo girl and then 20% to the girl who cut my hair. She did a good job and I really like the cut... And I really really needed a cut! But ouch. It hurts to pay that much for a haircut, knowing I'll be needing another one in about 8 weeks.

I routinely walk out of the salon with a $200 bill ... and my stylist IS part owner and I still tip her (although about 10%).

I can see how it would add up to that... I just got a cut, nothing special, at a mid-range salon.

No color, although as always my roots need to be done. Sigh. Next time.

Same here and my salon isn't the fanciest place in town. The bill does include highlights and deep conditioning though and I usually leave closer to 15% assuming that it's being shared with whoever did my shampoo and conditioning. Since they're always happy to see me, I don't think anyone feels offended or left out.

Neither is mine, by a long shot. The place I used to go is considered "higher end / spa", and my stylist there (who was level 5 Aveda -- her cuts alone were $66!), left to buy into a salon in Lawrence. That's the main reason I continue to tip, even though she technically is the owner -- her prices went down when she moved out there (she does complete color / full highlights for $100 flat where just color / partial highlights would have topped $200 at her old salon).

I get charged $55 (cheap out here), and tip between 15%-20%, depending on shampoo/condition/style, or just a "trim."

Lamorna found a great stylist, and gave me the hook up via word of mouth.

I'll post a photo when I get all dressed up this weekend to go to a wedding of one of DHs classmates... But I can't replicate the do, unfortunately! Flat straight hair... She used some "root boost" spray-- I may try that...
