  • Best E-reader?

So, DH has been asking me if I want an E-reader for my rapidly approaching birthday. I've been looking at the Kindle 2 because the price just dropped and I've heard pretty good things from those who have them, but I'd love to hear your advice? (Just more proof that I am addicted to IMSN opinions!)

    TIA!

    Re: Best E-reader?

I just got an ipad so I'mnot looking at ereaders anymore, but I was leaning towards the Nook. And when I heard about the wifi only version for cheaper, I knew that if I didn't have the ipad that's what I'd probably get. Of the apps for my ipad I like the B&N one the best. It's easy to buy books from their site and they are usually cheaper. One feature that I think is huge is the lendability. You can only do it once per book but I think being able to lend an ebook is sweet. If I'm paying paperback prices I want to be able to share it like I would a paperback. Or read the first in a series from a friend to determine whether I want to buy the rest ya know? You can browse books 'on the shelf' if you are in a B&N store via the Nook so if you sit there all day and read a book on the shelf it's free. Same with the library, if the library supports it. I think that's the same for the Kindle though too.

I have the kindle and really love it. Plus the wireless on it is pretty good, connects on 3G i think. Plus the price drop is great, but that being said, I am toying with the idea of selling it and getting an iPad! But my concern with the Ipad is, do i have to get a data plan from At&t to work it?

I have the Kindle DX, and it works really well for what I need it to do. It's the bigger version, but it has native pdf support, which I wanted so I could put a bunch of work documents on there and read them instead of printing things out for trial/depositions/travel.

As a reader in general it works great, and I've been really happy with it. I am already addicted to amazon in an unhealthy way, so the ability to just shoot copies directly to my kindle makes me very happy. I'm sure the nook works the same way, but I don't think I'd get much use out of the other features.

Probably next gen iPad I'll think about switching, as it seems like there are some great pdf reader apps for that, but I will miss the e-ink screen.

          Best E-reader?

I got a Nook for Christmas and I love it. No experience with a kindle, though. DH got mine for me so I would stop taking a suitcase full of books with me when traveling (I read really fast). It has definitely been used when we are on the road, but I use it at home, too. It is small enough to fit in my purse, and great to have when I am driving the mom taxi. The only issue I have is that prior to getting it, I only let myself buy books from Half Price Books....it was that or the library. Now I am spending way more on books than I used to!

I don't think so if you get the Wifi version? But I could be wrong...

Kindle2 does the PDf thing -have not personally tried it but my friend uses it all the time. Luv my kindle. Between the Nook and Kindle, I'd say that there are pros and cons to both but if all you need is an ebook reader - I'd go with th eKinle2 since the price is pretty nice.

No. The basic iPad is wi-fi only, and you don't even have the option to have a data plan. I got the iPad w/3G, but I haven't signed up for any data plan yet, b/c so far I've only used it where there is a wireless connection. For the iPad, you can do month to month, so if you're traveling and want to use it where there is no wi-fi, you can sign up and then cancel when you're done. I wanted the option.

I've also got a sony reader. It was good, I was happy with it, but I was taken with the iPad. DH got me one for our anniversary. Michele - thx for the feedback re: the B&N app. I've used the Kindle app so far, and I've liked it. Perhaps I'll try the B&N app next -- I like the idea of sharing.

Compared to the Kindle2, I hated the Sony Reader. DH bought it for me and I returned it. Some time later, I bought the Kindle. I don't think you can compare the IPad to the Nook or Kindle since it is a different beast. With the Kindle, I actually like the fact that my fingers dont have to touch the screen. You never know when you will need to munch on greasy potato chips while reading a trashy novel. Seriously though, whenever I try to read something on DH's IPad, I always have to stop and look for something to wipe the thing down...same thing with the Iphone. Also, the Ipad is not as snuggle friendly as the Kindle or Nook - it is heavier. Different beast I tell ya - does waaay more but if you just want a reader...then I'd compare Nook and Kindle.

I have the Kindle and the iPad. Since we got the iPad, I've been reading most of my Kindle purchases on the Kindle app because then I can turn the lights off for my sleepy husband and just read the screen. Also, the newspapers on the iPad are far, far, far better than any news version I read on the Kindle. They just read more naturally -and the photos, images and layout in the original publication is somewhat maintained. I was absolutely disappointed in the Kindle NYT version because I had hoped to read the Times through Kindle delivery each day. Canceled that delivery after a week - but I will read USA today, NYT and Wall Street Journal through the apps on the iPad (and they are free, too).

I honestly feel the iPad is the death of the iReader. It feels like VHS at the introduction of DVDs. I just don't think most readers are that attached to the text like a written page and so many of us have already adapted to reading so many things on a computer screen.

I still buy books though. I can't bring myself to purchase more than trash paperbacks/idle interests in eVersions. I use the pdf feature often on the Kindle - in fact that's all I use it for these days. I've downloaded all my manuals and contracts, etc in PDF and I store them all on my Kindle for quick reference and access. Beats a file cabinet any day.

All very good points. The iPad IS quite heavy (for a reader, that is). If I were in the market for a pure reader, I'd probably go with the Nook -- I've heard it's the most intuitive / esthetically friendly. I will say I've really enjoyed using the Kindle app on my iPad -- it is SO MUCH EASIER than the 75 steps required to purchase books on the Sony Library store (or whatever it's called).

My parents have loved their ipad. So far- They get back tomorrow from their trip to Alaska, which was the excuse for buying the iPad and I'll report in accordingly.
