Yes, we are. We've decided to wage a wholly justified war over which country must house Madonna and Gwyneth Paltrow. The British are trying to return them to the United States, as the Brits have grown sick of having their accent imitated by self-absorbed, boring, obscenely wealthy American actresses who prattle mindlessly about how much they "prefer" London to the US. Americans, on the other hand, are tired of being insulted by self-absorbed, boring American actresses who--despite having grown up in places like Detroit and Santa Monica--insist that they don't "notice" their forced, faux Queen's English.

It is expected to be a long, dragged out war with no real winner--unless both blondes are ultimately launched into the pond in between the warring nations.

Did you know Madonna and Gwyneth are no longer friends? Supposedly had a big falling out after Madonna's divorce - the tragedy!

I was in Mississippi when I was a teen

6th-9th grade. Was happy to leave, though the schools in the area we were (suburb of Jackson) could have been worse.

My favorite MS story is that I was in Elvis' birthplace in Tupelo, and in the museum/giftshop, there were some books for sale. The sign next to them said "Please do NOT read books"

If I could teach a big lesson to the general populace, it would be about levels of government. I'm often stunned by the phone calls I get. I work for the CITY Council. I know there's a social security office in the city, but they're run by the FEDERAL government. No, we aren't the same thing.

I AM SO WITH YOU ON THIS.

                  "So, what do you do?"

                  "I work for a U.S. Bankruptcy Judge."

"So, is that...like, a state court judge?"

                  ________________

And, at least once a week, I have to help some poor hapless person who has shown up at our courthouse...to serve county jury duty. No, that's the courthouse across the street.

Although my personal favorite is the folks who show up (correctly) at our courthouse to serve as jurors...but they are PISSED because "I just did jury duty!!" Yeah, you did it for the state. We're the feds. Sorry.

Ditto. DS loves it. The original broadcasting comes on really late for him, so he has to watch the re-runs. But right now, all I hear about is the American Revolution, because he's seen that episode several times. I love the commentary that is included. They pick from a wide variety of people with many different perspectives.

Haha, even so, I doubt the city/state has changed much.

"I'm continually amazed how few people are aware of things outside their local community or even county.

This couldn't be more true! I know this is an old post, but I find myself on a daily basis having to explain the tinest littlest things to people. And it's all for education. I use to say I wouldn't mind putting my kids in public school because I was a product of it, but the more I hear of education cuts, and everything else...it looks like private school will be happening So, the DH better start saving

It has more to do with people not being curious or caring about anything outside of their immediate sphere than public vs. private education systems. Parents who emphasize and value the importance of education tend to have kids who are, at a minimum, curious about the world surrounding them.
