I was thinking about getting a family YMCA pass. DH has gained a considerable amount of weight while in medical school. He is in his intern year, so is it completely useless to think he will come home and go to the Y with me?

I don't think it's completely out of the question. We are in your boat - DH put on weight after med school (thanks, residency!), and is always complaining that he wants to lose weight.
I'm about 4 months post-op, and finally ready to start easing into work outs again. We just got a membership w/ 24 hour fitness and to make sure we both go, we're getting up at 4:45a.m. and swimming 1-2 hrs a day together.
Not sure if that's your thing, but we chose a.m. because there were too many things that could go wrong with p.m. (traffic, call, not wanting to go, etc).
You have my support! Go go go!

Mine does not and probably would not even with a gym membership. But I don't think intern year precludes that necessarily, although it does give him excuses. HAHA this makes me laugh, does DH work out.... Does going to the fridge to get something count.... But he is like rail thin, it pisses me off actually. I eat lettuce and gain wait and he eats a feakin cheeseburger and looses it. I am trying to get him to start running with me. I told him we should do the couch to 5K, so that when he is on his aways he can run ( he is on rad aways, and his first away schedule is like 9-3 M-F). So it will seem like we are doing something together. We will see but who knows...

*sigh* Working out is a recurrent problem for us. DrK has a Y membership and we just upgraded to a family membership. Now the baby can take swimming lessons and I'm hoping that we can spend some family time there, maybe DrK and I can even squeeze in some work-outs.
Our weekends and evenings together are too short with so much to do. DrK is a bit of a jock and he gains weight easily so he really wants to work out. But I feel abandoned when in the middle of the evening rush he announces that he has to go to the gym. Then I feel like I'm not being attentive to his health or personal needs when I ask him to stay home with us instead. I'd love to spend some time at the lap pool or even in the steam room but I feel like I don't have time. We are in the same boat. DH gained a bit of weight during med school and intern year. I have gained weight because of the baby...well no..I can't blame the baby, we've just been eating poorly. We initially were going to do a family gym membership but decided against it and instead. I plan to work out during baby naps and when DH gets home, he takes little E on a 2-3 mile walk in the stroller.Danielle

We belonged to a 24 Hour Fitness during residency, it had locations near home and near work so he could work out a little that way. Mostly though his exercise came from bike commuting 14 miles each way to the hospital. (These days, he's getting about 20 hours of cycling a week I think, and is not on my gym membership.)Alison

We signed up for a 24 Hour Fitness four blocks from our townhouse as soon as we arrived here for residency, and while DH and I don't go every day we do manage to make it there a couple times a week. I think some people think you have to work out for an hour or more at a time for it to be effective, but that's not the case at all. We just go when we have time, even if that's only for 30 minutes or so. I enjoy the walk there/back with DH more than anything else, since it's a few minutes of uninterrupted time to talk without the TV, phones, etc.
DH also bikes to/from work when it's not raining, although given that we're in the Pacific Northwest I'm not sure how long that's going to last.

Mine definitely works out. Gets a little grumpy if he can't. When we were in undergrad he would wake up at 5am to play basketball for an hour or two as well as playing during his lunch break. During medical school we had a membership [via scholarship] to the Y. He would wake up at 4am, 3 days a week to work out and played basketball Wed and Sat nights. When he started residency he joined the hospital gym and would work out before rounding 3 to 4 days a week. The residents also play IM basketball. PGY2 he discovered that he has a a lifetime membership to 24 hour fitness through his mom [been a member since he was 12]. He dropped the hospital gym membership which has made it a little harder for him to work out. But there are quite a few of the residents who have 24 hour memberships, so they play basketball on the weekends and he works out after work when he can. He is on trauma now, so it's been harder to work out.
I worked out all the time during medical school. There were 4-5 wives who always worked out together 3-4 days a week. The Y nursery was free too and they changed diapers and rocked my howling daughter for 2 hours so that I could work out. DH and I would play racquet ball together and worked out when he was around. Now, I have a 24 membership, it's just for 2 years. It's been harder to for me work out because I hate their "nursery" and refuse to use it, so I can only go when DH is home. I've been taking zumba there pretty regularly though and love it. My neighbor recently joined too and we've been working out together when the guys are home.
Yes, DH works out. Whether yours will go with you or not depends on his attitude towards working out. Mine has always worked out and likes to stay active. We go on walks and bike rides with the kids.

We joined the Y, DH worked out quite a bit for a while and then he didn't. So he switched to the gym at the hospital and did the same thing now he does neither and I don't see that changing anytime soon, he just doesn't have time.Wife to NSG out of training, mom to 2, 10 & 8, and a beagle with wings.

Does your DH want to join the gym? Is there a big difference in price to add him? I imagine residency will be an adjustment and it will all depend on whether he considers exercise a priority.
I know my DH has to work out, he loves it and it is "his" time. We joined the hospital gym because the residents get such a great discount. However this year I think it will greatly vary how much he gets to use it. Right now he's on vascular surgery and I bet he'll be lucky to get in 4 or 5 times this month.... but next month he is on anestesia so I imagine he'll have plenty of time. But I am glad that he will have it for when he does have time.
As for losing weight - DH and I have put on some weight with all the dinners out before and after moving and then going on vacation. I'll be at the gym and weight watchers to take it off while he'll lose it all on this months rotation because he only seems to have time to eat a cliff bar or two during the day. (He lost 10 pounds on his first away rotation last year).Loving wife of neurosurgeon

The only time DH loses weight is when he is on surgery. I think he lost about 20 pounds on general surgery from running all the stairs. I think I might go on and get a family membership anyways so that DS can do sports teams. DH does go on bike rides with the boys, but that's about it right now. He also plans on riding his bike to work. He does want to get the weight off, but not bad enough to get up at 4:45 to workout! I would like for going to the Y to be family time that we could all look forward too.
