We never ask our guests to remove their shoes. My only shoe rule is that the hospital shoes come off at the door, and this is something that all his med school friends knew. YUCK

Krystal, I'm in your boat - DH's hospital shoes live outside.
As for the house: I grew up removing mine before entry, due to our white carpet and red dirt. Bad combo.
DH's family is Asian, so shoe removal is out of cultural tradition and a sign of respect.

Not sure what our policy will be once we have our own place.

We tend to make the kids take off their shoes because they honestly have no clue when they are tracking in mud. But adults do what ever in my parents house.

We always take our shoes off in our home, and in other people's homes. But I try to be a laid-back person, and would never insist (or even ask) that someone remove their shoes in my home. It's not a big deal to me at all if they keep their shoes on.

We don't really have the shoe off policy at my house. My hubby is Filipino, so when we visit his family it is shoes off and I have lots of friends who do the shoes off. To me, if that is how they want things in THEIR home, then I should follow it. It is disrespectful to do otherwise.

hmm...i am asian... so the culture back at home is to take shoes off in the house...it is so much cleaner and more hygeine....here at the US...i do not ask people to take off their shoes.. but i would be very uncomfortable thinking the amount of dirt they carry into the house... so one idea is to put a shoerack next to the door and offer nice slippers on the carpeted floor... ewww... just the thought of mud trapped in carpets makes me feel grossed out... and trust me... taking out shoes saves you a lot of time on cleaning up...
