  • Broken Toe

Do I really need to go to the doctor for a most likely broken toe? I slipped on the stairs this morning and now it hurts like the dickens. Isn't black and blue but its swollen. I can't even get DH to call me back to get his opinion, not that a NSG is going to be much help.

Anyone have experience with a broken big toe?

    Broken Toe

If there is a chance that it is dislocated, you should go to the doc.
If you do go, and it is broken and not dislocated, they likely won't do much. Toes hurt like hell.

Is there a way to know if it might be dislocated? I can partially bend it but not all the way.

Well hopefully you might have just sprained it. Most times bruising will occur later, and even the next day with a fracture or sprain.

Did you hear it break or crack? Are you unable to move your toe joint? Is your toe crooked? Are there any noted deformities? Is your toe dislocated? If yes to any of these, a trip to your family doctor is in order, because there are signs of a possible fracture.

Ice Ice Ice baby. Do the 20-30 mins in an icy toe bath to help with the swelling. Keeping your foot elevated and pressure off of the painful joint will help. Motrin is not always the choice for fractures, consult your doc for pain relief. Tylenol is usually safe. Keeping your toe in a stiff-soled shoe can protect the toe and helps keep it positioned.

Sprains: You usually feel tenderness in the toe and pain when moving, and swelling as well. Ice Ice Ice baby. Motrin is usually safe for sprains to help with the inflammation. Keep off your toe as much as you can, and elevate. If the pain and swelling do not improve in 3 days or so, you might have torn a ligament or have a fracture.

The only way to truly know if it is a sprain or fracture, is by xray.

If the fracture or sprain is not severe, some docs will splint the big toe or tape it to other toes, to the next toe mate. You can do this with some bandage tape: It's also called buddy taping. Surgery is only for the more severe cases.

        Hope this was helpful!

          Broken Toe

Chad says it's a feel thing. Like you feel around the joint. I don't know. You should probably go in, but it's more for confirmation than specific treatment.

OUCH! An Ob/Gyn isn't a great help, either, but in the past he has advised not going in b/c they wouldn't do anything. I didn't know about the possibility of dislocation. No help with that, just lots of sympathy.
ETA: My post crossed with the others. Looks like you're getting answers.

My issue is that DH leaves this afternoon for a course in St. Louis so I will be alone with the kids for 4 days. I'm tempted to go to the express care near my house when A wakes up from nap. We'll see...

So if I wait until Friday to have it looked at if it still hurts or is swollen is that bad? I have the kids in daycare on Friday...

Not that you should do this but my grandmother walked around on her broken leg for 1 week before going into the doctor. In my minimal experience - it is a good thing that you can still bend it, maybe it is only a sprain! (still ugh) ((hugs))

Ugh - injured toes are the worst! What a painful nuisance! I'm sorry - I hope you can at least get it looked at!

Well since I just read that it can take 4-6 weeks to heal I think it can wait until Friday

Ouch! Toe injuries are the worse (next to tooth stuff)! The only rec. I would have is to tape it to the next toe. I know a couple people who let a broken toe just chill, and it grew over their next toes
