  • Yeah, I'm a city girl, what about it?

Today there was a Legislative Agenda conference at the Menger Hotel (right next to the Alamo to give you some perspective) and I had to be there by 8:30am. My choices were: drive, bus, bike, walk.

I rode my fabulous new bike and it was so fun! and discovered that the Menger didn't have a bike rack. (they put it in with the checked luggage) Hilarious. All of my colleagues were 'shocked'. (even after I reminded them that I live about a mile from the hotel...)

    I don't know if I posted here but it's an Electra Townie 3 (www.electra.com)

I can't wait for it to cool off a bit more so that I can do the 4 mile route to my 'real' office.

Got one too!! DH bought it for me last birthday. Mine is lime green with a fab basket that can hold 4 bottles of wine!! Hey, better in the checked luggage, no hot seat/handlebars.

ETA - inspired me to change my avatar.

I'm right there with you. I can walk my girls to nursery school, I can walk or take the train to DS's school (although I often drive), one of the largest public parks in the country is across the street....

LOVE city living. I would not trade this for all the 5000-sq-foot luxury on earth.

I'm a city girl stuck in the suburbs (and jealous!). I have done the 9 mile bike ride to my downtown office a couple times, but it's an excursion.

I'm a member of a bike-share program. Yesterday was my first day of grad school... took the bus to work, took a bike-share bike to campus after work, took the bus home. Today class goes too late for the bus, so I drove to campus and parked there. Bike-shared back to my office, and will bike-share to campus tonight for class.

        Multi-modal transit ftw.

That's awesome Jenn! I know the feeling! I bike to work now everyday! I used to walk the 1.5 miles to work, but once I pulled the "old Fiery one" from storage and brought it back to life: it's my new best friend.

I almost bought the lime green one! Mine has the platform basket that they don't make anymore. I was coveting these FAB messenger bags at the bike store today (had to buy a pump since apparently mine is in DC) that were purple and silver flowers.

            Mine is robin's egg blue.

I can't wait to get out of the country and back to a place where I can actually ride my new bike!

I saw a bell at REI that was lime green and said "I love my Townie". Told DH my birthday was coming up and I could use a bell. Why he asked, "so, I can ring it" - duh!

Yeah, I'm a city girl, what about it?

I'm not coordinated enough for bike riding, but for just a mile (assuming sidewalks), I'd totally walk! In fact, I got a 2-day temp gig in Cbus the first week we were here about 1.5 miles away an really enjoyed walking back an forth. There weren't many others out and about, but I definitely saved on parking!

It's funny how adverse to walking people in driving cities seem to be. I wish I could walk to my current job, but it's 10 miles away and the road is not very pedestrian-friendly after the first 4 or so miles.

Stayed at the Menger wayyy back in the day when my dad had a conference in San Antonio and decided to take the whole family with him. Apparently it's haunted? Glad I didn't know that then!

That's awesome. I LOVE your bike. And totally know what you mean about the shock value of not driving a car. I have several co-workers who don't understand why I don't drive to work... even though I live 4/10 of a mile from the office and parking in our office garage is $110/mo.

That's what? 5-8 blocks, depending on the size of the block...who DRIVES that far, especially when parking's that expensive (unless there's some physical limitation or something)? That sounds like a lovely 10-15 minute stroll to me. Would probably take almost as long to pull the car out, get through traffic, and get parked, too. Your coworkers are crazy.

Agreed -- totally crazy. The driving culture here is ridiculous. It takes 10 minutes in flats, 15 in heels. Best part of my day. When I've gone to lunch with co-workers who insist on driving to restaurants in the same vicinity as my apartment, it does in fact take just as long. They're all OMG what do you do when it RAINS? But I have this great invention called an "umbrella"....

Yay! I love them. There's a station right across the street from my office.
