Coworker Questions

I've been working at my new PT job for about 1 month now. I have two questions:

1) Coworker S asked me to a tea party/potluck at her house on Sunday. Not a big deal, really, but Coworker S is 18, and I'm 26: should I go? Does age matter? Is it too soon to go plunging into someone else's personal life?

2) Coworker N smokes. A lot. Often when we work together, he is standing about 4 feet away from me, and the smell is so strong that it triggers my gag reflex. I've tried switching out, and working next to other coworkers, but sometimes it can't be helped. I don't want to say anything, but it really kills the pregnant nose. Any advice?

I think she is referring to two different co-workers.

Regarding co-worker S, I don't think the age matters. Personally, I don't socialize a lot with my co-workers because I'd almost always rather not know what is going on in their personal lives. (I've been really shocked at the drama that I'd rather not know about.) Is she a subordinate or senior to you? That may be relevant.

Regarding co-worker N, sheesh. I've had a couple stinkos in my workplace -- and those are usually the ones who have zero regard for personal space. I usually try to avoid or hold my breath or just keep moving when I work with them.

1) I'd go. It sounds fun.

2) Gross! I think that's something to discuss with your manager. Personal hygiene issues should be dealt with by management or HR.

The tea party/potluck sounds fun. Its not as if its a rager or just plain out party. I would be concerned if that was the case, because as I am sure you know, a party with 18 year olds is much different then late 20s. Anyway, what I am trying to say and not very gracefully, is that a pot luck is a little bit more sophisticated then just a regular party and who knows who you might meet there. I would go. If its weird, you know to politely decline next time. Also, if its a pot luck, usually those are come and go. If its uncomfortable, you stay an hour and then excuse yourself.

As for the smoker. Nasty. I am so sorry. I wish I had advice. I know someone who made sure the place she worked at was well stocked with plug-ins.

I would go to the party. When you tell her you will be there you could say you have plans later so you can leave early if you want to without being rude.
