  • doggie UTI

I don't have access to the dog chat area, so I was hoping some dog lovers may have had this problem and can help. My little 4 year old dog may have a UTI, she has been peeing the last week up to 10x a day, which is unlike her. I am thinking she may have a UTI, online vet recommend antibiotics and acidic juices, but some other websites said antibiotics for a UTI could make it worse and acidic juices are not recommenced for dogs, we currently don't have a vet in our new town. any advice?

You need to find a vet. It's most likely a UTI, more common in females than males....and needs antibiotics. However there are a few other diseases that can cause increased peeing and they definitely warrant early detection and care. If you leave a UTI untreated it can progress to the kidneys or/and it can lead to bladder stones.

ETA: this is actually a good way to check a vet out....if they are nice, accommodating, appropriately concerned, offer appropriate testing/diagnostics. If you like them, you'll like them for her wellness care too. If you don't, look for another vet next time.

Thanks! She is small and was just in heat, and kept licking herself and so did my other dog, also we just gave her a new kind of food. Thanks for the advice!

Yeah. And they'll likely want to test her urine too...plus antibiotics you are likely looking at around 150$. Hopefully less.

girlnextdoor - what websites said antibiotics would make a UTI worse? What was their reasoning? I just ask because that makes no sense to me.

When our GSPs have had UTIs, we've always given them antibiotics, and it clears it right up.
We also have a jug of chlorhexiderm. When they were young, we'd flush out the area with that stuff & a needle-less syringe. Not sure what Michele thinks, but it did seem to cut down on the infections.

When one of our pups got a UTI we took them in, the antibiotics cleared it right up!

not so sure I love the vet office I went to today, it is fancier than any doctors office I have ever been too, maybe that is the plan make it look nice, stand by the calming waterfall, yes full out 5 foot waterfall and nicer decor and couches than my living room so you stay calm when they tell you the price of the vet bill at check out.
Anyways $100.00 for a office visit and urine collection, (not including the amount it will cost to send out the urine to be tested by the way, just the charge to collect the urine) sorry if thats TMI but, the vet said we don't want to give you antibiotics until we get the test result next week, great so the vet recommend to take the dog out frequently till than and don't cage her.
She said sometimes small dogs just get UTI. We have never had a problem till now and she is only years old. I would be really interested to know if the chlorhexiderm helps any.

The website didn't give a reason why antibiotics would be worse.

I asked them if they were hiring as I was checking out, I think I may need a job at a vet office so I can get a discount.

Yeah. Vet bills and offices can be crazy money sucks. Im not the biggest fan of the current wave of vet care. I kind of prefer the old school type of vet. However that breed is almost extinct. I hope your doggie is doing okay.

now I am REALLY not so happy with this vet office. They currently have 4 or 5 vets at the office, they were supposed to call me today with the results, but I never heard from them, so I called just now and they said yeah the results are in, but they are in the one vets mailbox and she is on vacation so she will be back in next week. What the crap? And since no one is allowed to open her mail or mailbox you will have to wait till she gets back for the results. Um excuses me???? I wanted to yell you guys SUCK in the phone, but I just politely asked if there is anything else I can do, or they could do. Her response was well I can talk with the supervisor that gets in tomorrow afternoon and see what she says. Thanks. What the crap?

Totally not acceptable doesn't even begin to cover it - REALLY? They knew she was on vacation so they chose her to give the results to? REALLY? I would have demanded to speak to someone then I'd tell them I'd be requesting my records transferred to another vets office in the next week or so, you are much nicer then I.
