I'm literally laughing out loud reading these! We got a Christmas card from my parents neighbors (practically family) addressed to "Dear DH and Melissa" I laughed. Seriously they are like my aunt and uncle.
People always seem to spell my name with 2 r's yet I've never met anyone who spelled it that way.
And my last name is like "brown" and people still ask how to spell it.

TD your making me think twice cuz I addressed a friends card with her maiden name cuz she made it clear she wasn't changing her name till they had kids, but I noticed the card I got from them was signed from the "Smiths"

Yeah, I just do not understand why it's so hard. I do not mind random people spelling it wrong the first time they encounter it but family members and long time friends should be able to remember it's an "IE' not a "y" or "i".... If you can't remember then just refer to me by my "big" name. My other HUGE pet peeve is people nicknaming my nickname when they have known me for 5 seconds. UGH!

Also I am a total stickler for etiquette and if you are going to address things to "Doctor" then do it correctly and if the other spouse is a doctor then address them as well. I generally think the addressed to "doctor" cards are silly but since my husband's MD is so new I currently appreciate it to some degree. I can't spell to save my life and therefore I am very, very careful to note how people spell their names, I guess I shouldn't expect the same back.

This is a huge pet peeve of mine too! All of my family and friends use my nickname, although my first name is not that difficult to pronounce. I used to get mad in school when teachers called me my nickname on the first day of school! No, check your roster, I'm pretty sure that my full first name is on there. Please use that for the first week until I give you the okay to use my nickname (and I decide whether or not I like you).

Yet people constantly mispronounce my married name, misspell it, mistake it for my first name, and insist that they know people "with the exact same name except it is pronounced and spelled differently." It never bothered me when people got my maiden name wrong but I guess that's because I always looked forward to changing it when I married.
This is me, but the exact opposite. My maiden name is extremely common. Pretty easy to spell and pronounce, but you would be surprised how many people would leave out the silent "gh" - the girl at the Saks counter couldn't spell my last name and all of the flyers from them come missing those two letters. My married name is probably only held by like 20 people in this country, it is extremely Polish/Ukranian and very rare. I think all of us are concentrated on the East Coast near NYC too. I have to spell it out every time I go somewhere, there is no way in hell I could leave it to anyone to figure out on their own. Hell, my own mother still can't pronounce it and it's been 7 years.

I think what bothers me the most is the instance that my name is "exactly the same" as a name that is both pronouced and spelled differently. That's like saying that Brown is exactly the same as Smith. I usually respond, cheerfully, "Well, then I guess it's not the same name." That response seems to piss people off too because they are so sure that it really is exactly the same.

Mil always spells my name wrong. It's a weird spelling so I don't mind if others/strangers get it wrong but geeze she should get it right!

The purse thing is really rude!

Got ya beat. On the Christmas card my in-laws gave us after 3 or 4 years of marriage, I was listed as Jane.

Yeah, you win. Although, my FIL did have to call me a year or two ago to find out how to spell my last name (I never got around to changing it to my husband's name, so I still use my very simple maiden name). We've been married for 7 years.

I am excited to change my last name. The play on the way my last name is spelled (but not how its pronounced) gets old. I think I started hearing the first teasing for it in elementary school. Although when the call isnt someone who knows me, and just wants to sell me something, they get it wrong and I can, with out lying, say there is no person by that name who lives here.

Haha! My parents' last name is Tongue. Yes, like the thing in your mouth. You'd never guess how many people can't spell that word.

As an aside, my maiden name is a rare Ukrainian name which nobody can spell or pronounce, so I couldn't wait to change it. Now I feel a bit guilty because so few people had it: my dad and grandpa who are both dead, my cousins, and their dad. If they don't have kids, the name will die with them.

Yeah I was really excited to change my name but now I have to admit I miss my maiden name somedays. It's a relatively rare Czech name and I only have one male cousin who might pass it on. My married name is MUCH more common and although I love it was a lot easier getting email addresses, user IDs etc with my maiden name! I never thought I would care so much....
