iphone grumbles...

I'm considering getting rid of my iphone....I'm even thinking of getting a phone with no internet or email, but that might be a diff. discussion ... maybe it isn't?

My iPhone just engages in one glitch after the next and it drives me nuts. I can no longer turn it on and off. Today, the email function wouldn't work and then when it did, it wouldn't allow me to navigate back to the inbox or to the next email.

Beyond that, if I'm talking on the phone now it will mute or put someone on hold at will. I have even inadvertently dialed someone else or set off my music while talking on the phone.

Those are the biggie issues with the phone itself.

I kind of question the value of being able to check my emails or internet all of the time though too. I'm finding that it is a bad habit and I don't have the self-control to not check it constantly. :/

Hmm DH has had his for over a year and hasn't had any issues. And he is a heavy and abusive user. Maybe you just got a glitchy phone?

Kris, I have issues with mine as well! Specifically muting and putting people on hold, just by putting the phone up to my ear. Ugh, so aggravating.

Jamie, that's what happens to me. I have tried holding it away from my ear, but then I have to put myself on speaker ... and that comes with it's own set of issues.

I have had the issues with mute and speakerphone and dialing as well. I am pretty sure there are ways to help that with the sensitivity settings. I'll look it up on my phone.

The proximity sensor issue is being caused by certain cases/screen protectors. I had an anti glare protective screen on my iphone 4. It worked perfectly. I put a privacy/anti glare screen on instead and started getting issues. I took the privacy screen off, made a call and had no issue. I then put on an anti glare screen like i originally had on and again, no issue. Therefore, if you are using a thick privacy screen or maybe a weird case that blocks the sensor in a certain way, you are probably having an issue because of it. Hope this helps.

My grumble with the iPhone is more of a grumble with Apple than the phone itself. I have the 3G. So two phones ago? And it just can't keep up half the time. It locks up, loses signal, shuts programs down. And the annoying problem? It doesn't show that it's charging on a wall plug. It will on a speaker mount and in my car, but not on a regular wall plug. I have to turn it off and on to see a change in the battery bar.

I think it's a crappy design by Apple to make the phone obsolete after a couple years forcing you to upgrade to the latest technology. Grr!

This is funny to me. I have the second iphone (I think) that Apple released. Other than dropping calls (which AT&T and iPhones are known for), I've had no problems. However, every time I have talked about getting a new phone (mine is getting a little banged up and I'd like more space for music and pics), my DH tells me not to because my version of the phone is the least "buggy." If I were you, Kris, I would see if there is any kind of update, etc that can be put on the phone to make it smoother, and then I'd try to maybe get trade-in value for it (even if you don't go with another iPhone). It's an expensive toy to not have it work.

I think the updates have made my phone worse. It's as if the processor in my 3G can't handle the newest OS.

Michele, that's exactly what Apple wants you to do...feel that your phone is obsolete so you buy a new one! I'm a total Apple fangirl, so you won't hear me complain about them often, but I'm pretty sure their business model (especially with iphones and ipods), is to make you feel "out-of-it" once you don't have the latest gadget! Especially with the ipod. Why does every version look completely different from the one before it?...to make it obvious that you don't have the newest model! Of course, there are people like me who are still using a 2G ipod...and rocking it!

I think with the iphone, they make them so they will only last about two years max, so you have to buy a new one. Which works for me, since I'm a bit hard on phones, and after two years, they've usually had enough of me.

I love my iphone, I really do, but I can totally see what you're saying Kris. I don't need to be checking email that often...

I am a true Apple Convert. I love love love love Apple products: not that doesn't exclude them from ever having issues. But compared to other PCs (and I use to build gaming pc's) and other phone limitations, I am very happy with their products.

As for the glitching Kris: I hope that it's a small fix or just a bad phone in that case. I can't say that my iPhone 3GS is perfect: I am now starting to have some Home button issues, like it doesn't always respond to my pushing; but like others have mentioned on here, I am very very hard on my devices, and now that is has been about 2 years since I have had it, it's held it worth.

I do agree the other ladies in that I think Marketing of iPhone and other technology is planned to make you "have" to get the new one. It's not just Apple. Look at Microsoft. If you don't get the new OS, your PC will just spend it's like crashing away with Vista, and the Xbox: sure when the 360 came out people were upset that their old games (hundreds of dollars) were not going to work on the new device...but got a 360 and new games...same with all the gaming systems, PS3, Cube, etc. I think it's just how our techy society is now: new is better, it's gonna look better, and do more "things." So it's sad and sometimes it's not much of an upgrade, so I think that where us choosy come in. It's where you decided do I need the iPhone 4 right now? or can I wait until the iPhone 5, 4GS...etc. So you're up on the technology (because lets face it ladies, if you don't, then you will not be in the "know" so to speak. Everything is on the internet now...and almost every business or company has a facebook page, and expects you to be email responsive and available.

I have to say that is where for me (sorry for my soapbox) that I have a ying/yang feeling about accessibility. I love you can text, call, email, fb, someone and get a response pretty quick, as well as GPS track your kids, find your friends close by, places to eat etc: but it's a double edge sword. It's no longer a convenience really: it's an expectation. It's another one of those areas where you have to personally find the line that works best in your life (unless you work Corporate, where you boss texts you at 11:45pm at night like mine does and expects response lol) anyway.

I have the 3GS and haven't had any major problems. When it's time to upgrade I'll probably switch back to Verizon. My biggest issue is the amount of time I waste on it. I'm not really into games but easily get sucked into wikipedia or imdb.
