Not as much ice as expected, so DH got into work safely this morning! Yay! But he had to treat himself to a birthday breakfast at Dunkin Donuts because our power was out when he left at 4:30 AM. It was so weird - it went out at 3:15AM, I called it in to the power company at 4:15AM and they said "the power will be back on by 5PM". Yeah right! Sure enough, it came back on 4:45AM. I can't figure it out - we have underground wires, it wasn't windy and there isn't really any ice out there, just the freezing of whatever melted yesterday.

Hope everyone else is hanging in there! It sounds really cold in some of your locations!

I have never seen this much snow in my life...DH's car is somewhere in the neighborhood - the furthest he could drive in his Solara. He was on call last night - NO ONE came in! I, on the other hand, ventured out with a couple of the PGY-5's in a 4 wheel drive truck to get some dinner (we could have walked to the restaurant if needed!) Mall and library closed until noon. Be safe everyone!

DH left for work at 6:45ish. The train didn't leave until 7:30. I spoke to a very un-amused DH at 7:45. The train wasn't moving. Apparently the rolling blackouts are effecting the trains too. Ridiculous.

I have 5 pull-ups left for Kenny and 3-4 rolls of toilet paper. Luckily, we have diet coke, wine, rum, Kahlua and vodka. You know, the necessities.

Maggie actually asked if she'd be able to go to dance tonight. Umm...I don't think the ice is going to melt before 5pm. LOL

We got only 12"-14" of snow. But with the wind, we have some gnarly drifts. Really, this is substantially less than our last lake-effect episode that dumped 30+" the night before we had to try to get ourselves to O'Hare.

Thankfully, DH had a bit of a golden day. He only had afternoon clinic, and that was cancelled.

yeah, it didn't look like much in the city at first, but I guess the crazy winds made for some insaaaane drifts - there were people stranded in their cars on lakeshore until 3am!

I'm the only person in my office on my floor, and it just started snowing again.

It's easy for me to get here with the CTA but J has to take the bus to get to lab, and she has to run an experiment at 3 this afternoon, so I'm a little worried about the roads still being impassible by then, but I'm sure she'll manage...

I am also unimpressed with the snowfall. I mean, I'm still not gonna leave the house today, but the city shut down everything. And it looks like we got like five inches overnight. Boring.

As to the KC snowfall being unimpressive -- it is, in context. KC doesn't get this kind of snowfall, and clearly cannot manage it.

While we haven't gotten a major amount of snow, I can't recall seeing temps as low as what's being reported on the news. With the windchill -24.

Our house is 58 degrees with the heat running constantly. Getting out of bed was SO hard. I'm trying to work from home but it's too dang cold. I'm braving the roads and going where there's heat. The power outages are affecting the building I normally work at (where all of IT for a Fortune 500 company is based). Yeah...this is going to be a fun day.

                    • It was -17 when I left for work this morning (actual temp, not wind chill). And, in typical Denver fashion, I still needed to wear sunglasses.

                        • We got the 22-24 inches predicted... I am still dumbfounded by the people who were stuck on the roads for HOURS and HOURS and eventually ended up abandoning their cars. The metra was crazy/insane/overfilled yesterday afternoon.

Once again I am grateful that we only live about 7 miles from the hospital. DH was home yesterday afternoon, and made it there safely this morning. I told him that if he would have been on another rotation that required him to work more hours I would have not let him come home. Luckily, he was home early yesterday, and didn't have till leave till 8:30 today. We supposedly only have a couple hours left, then the cleanup will hopefully begin!

                            • My parents said that the first night, they experienced thunderstorms that produced ice (man, I wish I could have seen that!) and that last night, it was all about the snow.
The weathermen where I grew up are amazing (woohoo Gary England!), so many people take what they say as law and do accordingly. Out here, the weathermen don't seem to understand how to report anything less than "sunny and 75." Listening to our local news, I was under the impression that everyone east and north of Colorado is buried, without power, and starving to death -- which apparently is not the case. *sigh*
To those of you who are without power and very cold, I'm thinking of you! Stay safe!!

                              • My husband has been stuck on the light rail train for 3 hours trying to get to the hospital to see his patients. There are rolling black outs. Our suburb is still covered in ice. My heater works well, but can't get seem to get to 70 this morning -- it's been fluctuating between 67-69 all morning. Our bill is going to suck, but we are home all day so we have to stay comfortable.
