  • Hiking what to wear?

I'm not a hiker. But I volunteered to go with the girl scouts tomorrow on a hike as the 2nd adult. I didn't know the hike will be 3.5 miles and take about 4 hours!!! Anyway, I don't know what to wear, and I'm not going to buy cargo pants. Dhs army stuff is way too big for me too.

I have jeans, khaki type pants, sweats, yoga pants... Should be in the 60s.

    Thanks in advance!!!
    Peggy

Jeans, t-shirt, light jacket that you can tie around your waist, good shoes, and bug spray.

Layers. I would go with the sweats or yoga pants, as you want to be able to move around.

REI has some good basic articles about what to wear and bring with you when you are hiking: http://www.rei.com/expertadvice/arti...ss+layers.html. You don't have to buy all of the fancy layers they are suggesting for this hike, as you probably have some of these things lying around the house.

I would also recommend a hat and sunscreen, and plenty of water.

Have a good time! I'm hoping we can get in the ADK hike we have been talking about for years this fall.

ETA: There's also a really good article about kids and hiking. It's a little lengthy, but there are some really great points in it: http://www.rei.com/expertadvice/arti...ds+hiking.html

Depends what type of terrain and climate you'll be hiking in. Grand Canyon bikers have substantially different issues than someone hiking the Beacon Rock trails.

It's rocky and uneven paths, but not very difficult since the girls are varying levels of outdoorsy-- mostly not outdoorsy-- and they are 4th and 5th graders.

I would go with a material on top/bottom that wicks h2o from your body. Less likely to chafe/get a heat rash. I second REI or another similar store. Ask an associate, and they will be able to guide you - remember, there are often items on sale or clearance for much less if you do not want to pay full price.

I'm not going to buy hiking stuff... No time and I just don't think I'd use it much. But maybe workout capris? They wisk water away. I could layer sweats over them. Idk.

I usually wear my most comfortable, loose jeans when I'm hiking in unknown terrain. If you're going to be around bushes, etc. you don't want to scratch your legs up.

I agree with the layers - jeans, t-shirt and a sweatshirt or jacket you can take off with comfy tennis shoes. You'll be fine. Have fun!

I'd go with jeans or cargos. The extra pockets can come in handy. Probably a long-sleeved T-shirt and some kind of jacket/windbreaker. I like to hike in my Doc Marten shoes because the sole is hefty.

This...I found comfortable jeans and a light jacket the best. If you are hiking up then it may be cooler at the top and layers are a plus. Have fun!

                          LSW, LOL!!!!

Just want to amend my previous statement about pants. Khakis are better than jeans; sweats are still an option. It's going to be in the upper 60s/low 70s on Saturday and there is a chance of scattered t-storms. If you encounter any water (or sweat) along your hike, khakis will dry more quickly than jeans. Your top layering options sound great.

Peggy- if you're heading north- like to Frederick- there are definitely more hills than hiking along the C & O canal. Next time have them 'hike' Rock Creek Park- there are flushing toilets every so often and you can walk 300 feet and find civilization.
