What do you need it for and what do you use? What programs? It makes a huge difference.

If you need MS Office, get a laptop. Does the new iPad have a USB outlet?

I have a macbook and I LOVE it! Although the iPad's are cool, they don't have a keyboard attached so you have to use the awkward onscreen one that takes some time getting used to. I'm pretty sure you can buy one to plug in but then you have to lug it around. My laptop is very light, quiet and stays cool. Kindles are basically digital books. They can't do much other than show you an image. Also, they don't have a light behind the screen so you can't read them in the dark. The benefit to the no backlight is that you can read them in the direct sunlight. In all honesty you could have all 3 devices and have all you needs met if they were:

word processing, e-mail, music, games, browsing -laptop
on the go e-mail, browsing, games, music storge - ipad
          reading - kindle

I would go with the laptop. Do you need to lug it in to work? Can you get a wee laptop?

I wouldn't get an iPad for work stuff. Yes, you can work on it, but typing is a PITA as would printing. It truly is a toy - an unnecessary, indulgent toy that I love. I don't even use it for reading because (in a 2 year old's whiny voice) "Its too heavy". I use a kindle for that.

I haven't really understood the need or use of an ipad but I have a macbook and a kindle and love them both!

iPad is good if you travel a lot...or if you have the attention span of a gnat...example: I am at the car repair shop and this is the only thing keeping me sane

If you plan in doing any word processing you should get a laptop. If you're looking for an ereader go with a kindle or a nook (although I prefer the nook...)

I use all three with regularity...

I got a Macbook Air this year and LOVE it! It's actually close in size to the iPad (I intentionally got the small one), so it can fit in a large purse. I still do too much typing and Office-type documents to make an iPad fit my needs, although they are fun. I also have a Kindle for reading.
