Thank for your input! I was a little hesitant of the sales man because he kept pushing navy and pin striped suits even after we told him we didn't like either of them. I was trying to be open minded, but spending $500.00 plus alterations is just a lot of money!

I don't know but my brother and SIL were poverty stricken at the time and the last thing they needed was having to buy him all new undies.

Gah. This thread reminds me that we need to get DH a new suit for graduation. The last suit we bought didn't fit terribly well and we're going to have a hell of a time (even with Jos. A. Banks' athletic cut) finding something to fit.

56" shoulders, 33" waist, and a 34" inseam = stupidly difficult to dress.

Diggity I feel you, my DH is a 44" long because he's got a crazy long torso. He's actually a 33" waist with a 34" inseam as well. Total PITA to find things that fit. We do a lot of tailoring!

If you have the money to spend I've heard the Brooks Brothers suits are a good fit for tall and skinny (like my husband) but he'll have to wait until after training for one of those.

I think we'd have an easier time if DH were tall and skinny. Instead, he's tall and a weightlifter so his shape is really funky. Athletic cut shirts have barely enough room for his biceps and shoulders, but could go around him twice at the waist. Finding pants is a lesson in futility. If I can even find some 33X34 pants, they are way too tight in the thighs. Especially the newer fit or "slim fit" that everything is in anymore. Even the super-relaxed fit jeans barely work. No wonder dude hates shopping.

Even finding shoes for him is ridiculous. The stores typically only have a couple pairs of 15s of which at least half are old man orthopedic shoes.

If he's more muscular/broad I would STAY AWAY from Jos A Banks. DH just bought two suits and some pants there. All of the pieces were tailored 3+times, and the pants finally were returned - they never fit correctly. We have always gone to nordstrom (the men's 1/2 yearly sale starts today), and told them we need to buy something for the least money that will look good. DH has two great suits from them that were around $300 each. He is a really tough fit (did semi-pro weightlifting in a previous life), and it's worth going somewhere with a professional tailor.

Diggity, same here. DrK used to play Rugby. He's 6'2" and over 250 lbs, very muscular. He gt his wedding tux at Nordstrom. We bought suits and a sports jacket at Brooks Bros years ago but they have since stopped carrying his size. No love for him at Men's Warhouse and those types of stores. I buy shirts for him at the big and tall sales and then invest in alterations that often cost as much as the shirt.

We mainly have problems with shirt length, he really does have a crazy long torso so anything that fits in length is way too big in the belly area. He's an XL length but a L width. I cannot imagine finding 15 shoes, we have a hard enough time with 14s. The pants aren't so great either, he's not really bulked or really skinny but the smaller waist with a longer inseam isn't easy to find. And the man has a butt which doesn't help with fit either! Sometimes I think it's harder for him to shop then me! He fits into JAB and other higher end stuff we cannot afford yet!

My husband has finally accepted that his clothes need to be tailored to fit. Period. He need to buy athletic cut dress shirts that fit his shoulders and neck and have them taken in. He's short so his pants always have to be hemmed. There is no off-the-rack purchasing for good clothes. However, every mens clothing place I've ever been in has tailoring- not so w/ the ladies departments. Even the PX has tailoring available- they use the same tailors that do the uniforms over at the military clothing stores.

Lots of guys around here with roughly the same measurements! Definitely some good advice about Nordstroms and Brooks Brothers to remember for when we start looking for interview suits in the near future, it's good to have another place to look besides Jos. A Banks.

DH fits well into their suits because he somewhere in between muscular/broad and tall/skinny. 43" long with a 36" waist and 34" inseam. Finding Dockers for him to wear is a huge PITA. Some times we find a 36/34, only to have him hate the color or me hating the pleats in the front. Dockers are the best for him to wear to work and I'm trying to wean him from occasionally wearing the suit pants to work because then the wear on them will be uneven as compared to the suit jacket. Anyone have any luck with a particular location for finding Dockers in the larger/taller sizes? Or perhaps a different brand of khaki-type work pants that wear well? TIA!

Our podunk town only has Macy's, Penny's and JAB. The nearest Nordstrom or BB is in Chicago and dude doesn't need a suit bad enough for a three-hour round trip.

DH wears Haagar. He likes them and they have lasted a long while - except his pockets tear because he stuffs them with crap and then tries to put his whole hand in there...I would also look online at places like Kohl's where they may carry other sizes than what they have in the store!
