  • Drowning doesn't look like drowning

    http://gcaptain.com/drowning/?10981

Stumbled across this today--I thought it was a great article. Anyone who didn't have lifeguard training (I didn't!) will probably learn a lot!

This is good, it describes a "passive" drowning victim, whereas the typical drowning displayed in the media is "active" drowning. In my many years of life guarding, I have seen both. Actually active usually occurs first, but many do not recognize it and it quickly slips into passive. Or the untrained eye brushes it off as play. I would like to mention however, that if you are not trained to rescue a drowning victim, your first instinct (if the victim is an adult or large child) should be to throw something they can float on - do NOT attempt to swim out to save them. I say this because if the victim is larger than you he/she will see you as nothing more than a floatation device as the rational part of their brain will not be functioning. There have been documented cases of double-drownings due to a botched rescue attempt. Why do you think LGs carry floatation devices?

    Thanks ST!!

Thanks so much for sharing. With all of our water play in summer, this has been on my mind. After reading this, I just signed my DD up for private swim lessons to bolster her endurance. She's got the basics but needs stamina. This article made a difference in our lives.
