Flying with baby, question #537

I'm flying by myself with DD (9 months) this Saturday, does anyone know if you can baby-wear your child through security, or will I have to take her out of the Ergo? And, if I have to take her out, will I be able to walk through the machine with her in my arms? Or will I have to set her down or hand her to someone to hold while I walk through by myself?

Or, if I bring our stroller, will I have to take her out of the stroller before going through the machine?

I believe you have to take her out of the ergo. I was not allowed to wear BabyK when he was 3 months. I had to carry him through the machine. The stroller has to be put on the conveyor belt.

I've been able to wear a kid through security several times. It must be airport dependent. I've only *had* to remove a kid from a carrier during take off and landing. And even then it depended on the flight attendant. One security officer just lightly patted the baby's back through the wrap. I think it was more just curiosity than the need to screen me.

Same here, through both Denver and Sacramento.

I was told I could leave baby in the Ergo if I would agree to a pat-down.

At DTW you can but will have to submit to a pat down. Ive done this.

What Bittersweet said. I too believe it's airport dependent. Some TSA people get really antsy but others don't care.
When I flew with DS by myself, the Ergo was worth every penny

And I've found that the flight attendants have always made me take baby out of the carrier during take off and landing, which can be a pain in the ass. You've been lucky!

That's so weird that they make you take them out for takeoff and landing. It seems like they'd be much safer being attached than just being held, right?

My guess is that since there is no data on the safety of baby wearing for take off and landing the CYA thing is to say "no, because the device is not FAA approved". As I preach on a regular basis, the only safe place for a baby on a plane is in a car seat.

Most of the air safety regulations are actually in place to make it easy for everybody else to deplane if needed (e.g., tray tables up, everything under the seats). I think they're afraid that it would be an obstacle to others trying to exit. Doesn't make that much sense, but so many of those airplane rules are for the safety of all of the passengers, not just one.
