  • Looking for recommendations for Charleston, SC

Anyone have recommendations for accommodations in Charleston? Restaurants? I'm not going, a friend is.

I'm not going to be of much help, as we went to Charleston 3 years ago and just visited for a day and a half. We actually stayed in Hilton Head, so I don't have any recommendations in terms of accommodations.

But we did have a good pizza at the Mellow Mushroom on King Street. King Street is nice to walk around, lots of shops and restaurants (its right in and around the College of Charleston Campus). We also walked over to Market Street near State Street where there was a market selling all types of handmade goodies, including some great straw baskets. We then walked down King Street, past all of the gorgeous houses to the waterfront along East Battery and Murray Blvd. Really pretty and we caught a beautiful sunset there. White Point Gardens is also right there and full of statues of Confederate war heroes and other SC folk. There are some B&Bs along here on South Battery that are situated in absolutely gorgeous houses.

Sorry I couldn't give you more info and I hope your friend has a great time in Charleston.

Accommodations: There are some lovely hotels. We love the Planter's Inn. The Harbourview Inn is supposedly very nice and has a very scene-y rooftop bar. The Charleston Place hotel is probably the most classic in the fancy hotel category. B&B's are arguably the more authentic Charleston experience. The Governor's House Inn is nice, but there are dozens.

Eating is the most important trip detail. Hominy Grill has the best shrimp and grits. Poogan's Porch is fun and very Charleston. Jestine's Kitchen for a casual soul food meal. Late night champagne and coconut cake at the Peninsula Grill. For fine dining, we had an amazing experience at McCrady's.

I love Charleston. If I think of others I'll update.

Thank you, Selu. Any plantation visits you would recommend?

Just saw a thing on cooking channel about Wild Flour Pastry. Looks yummy if you need a treat! Apparently, on Sundays, they do great stcky buns, and people line up out the door. Saw it and thought of this thread!

Drayton Hall, Middleton Place, and Magnolia Plantation. All three offer vastly different historical perspectives.
