  • iphone upgrade question

I am going to upgrade my iphone (of course) but I was wondering what will happen to my old iphone? It's not worth anything-- I can't sell it. The speakers don't work but otherwise it's ok-- works with headphones. Do you trade it in when you upgrade? Or do you get to keep your old phone too? And then can I just use it is a ipod touch with the wifi? Or does it get turned "off" somehow??

Thanks-- any help would be appreciated! I'm a little clueless...

I don't know about the still using it part but if you buy the new iphone at the apple store they'll give you 10% off the purchase price of a new one for your old one through their "recycling" program...

Why do you say it's not worth anything? I'm pretty sure you get to keep it. I'd sell it on eBay if you have no other use for it. There are plenty of people willing to buy a cheaper version of the iPhone, jailbreak it, unlock it, and use it on T-Mobile. I'm still pretty darn happy with my 3G that I got on eBay in spite of the fact that the vibrate toggle is broken.

ETA: Oh, so you mean you can't even use it as a phone? Hmm. I still think many people would buy it and attempt to fix it. I don't know.

You can still use it. Mine connects to wifi, and I've actually still gotten text messages on it. That seemed weird, but maybe it's something related to the cloud backup.

I heard that Best Buy is offering $50 store credit for old iPhones. Not 100% sure if that's true.

We use our old ones as an iPod touch for the kids.

If the speakers worked on it i would want to keep it for the kids. They could use it for their learning apps/flash cards, etc. as it is it has limited use to them. I don't know if the apps stay on the old phone if you keep it or if they transfer to a new phone only-- that would make a difference.

I really doubt I'd use it if I had the new phone. It would just be a toy/music player that I could use in my dock and that's about it...

Anyway my phone has water damage so I don't think they'd buy it back. I guess I will find out!!!

I was told about the buy back when I took my itouch in for service because the backlit broke, so I don't think working is a requirement.

Hmmmmm. Interesting. I might be crazy but I would prefer to get an iPad for the kids to use. Some of those learning apps on the iPad are amazing.

I'll def look into trading in my phone for $.

Are the speakers the only thing that is wrong with it? I'd still check on Ebay and see what they are going for. We sold DH's iPhone 3GS for $200ish in May. Granted, everything was working, but there is a chance you would get more via ebay than a trade in program

I'd sell it depending on the model you have. For a working iphone 4, you can get over $400 on ebay.

For example....here is a broken one that won't even turn on because of water damage:

                      Current bid price? $256

                      Sell it on ebay hon.

Even for a water damaged 3G you can get more than $50 on ebay.

Looking through completed auctions for iPhone 3GS with non-functioning speakers, I see that they go for well over $100. I don't really know what model you have, but I'd feel ripped off if I only got $50 at the Apple Store or similar. It may be hassle-free, but you can get so much more if you sell it yourself.

I went into the AT&T store and they said they'd buy back my 16gb 3GS for 170$ or so. That could change, but that's what they say now. And she checked it out and saw the water damage too.

I'd def do this-- kinda scary though for whomever gets my phone in the end. This is why I never get refurbished stuff.
