  • Elf on the Shelf

Has anyone done this? I never heard of before this year, now I see it everywhere. Just wondering if it's worth it, or if it's a PITA. (and by pita, I mean...do I have to remember to do something with it every day??)

Personally, I find the whole idea creepy and icky, but I'm not a fan of Santa, and we don't do Santa at our house. So, to each their own. I hope you enjoy it!

I haven't done it since I don't have kids yet, but I'm pretty sure you have to move the elf to a new place each night. All of my friends with kids that have done it said their kids loved it though.

When I nannied the kids loved trying to find the elf each morning.....although I think there were a few days where he stayed put.

My neighbors do this and their kids love it. I think our kids would like it - but I can't take on doing one more thing right now - so I vote PITA. 8 )

LOL. I do something similar with the kids, but I don't use an elf on a shelf...Lord knows I'd lose it or something.

We listen for jingling outside that might be bells on elf shoes. It's an awesome tactic with the little ones!!!! Soemtimes we'll try and peek outside to see an elf. Sometimes we dooo see an elf. Now the older kids even help out with the younger kids if they aren't going to bed, etc. "shhh. I think I heard an elf outside. Did you? Omg ... is that ... do you see that shadow? Quick ... into bed!!" LOL.

I'm still waffling. I didn't think about the creepy factor. When I was a kid, I used to hide my dolls faces when I went to bed because I didn't like their eyes watching me. So the kids will love it, it's dependent on me remembering. The tooth fairy has a great deal of difficulty remembering to stop by, too.

I have never heard of Belsnickel, thankfully!!

How else, other than fear of shame and corporal punishment from a strange old man, would you get small children to behave?!

I'm 99% sure that my family is related to Dwight Shrute.

Elf on the Shelf is the kinder, gentler version of the Belsnickel. My niece LOVES him and leaves notes for him, etc. When my mom's cat was ill, she asked Ted (the elf) to talk to Santa about helping the cat feel better.

I think the PITA is worth the return on investment. But that's me.
