I haven't had good experience with Bing. They predicted an 80% chance of fares rising, so we bought tickets. A few days later the tickets dropped by $100 each.

Also when searching for fares, make sure to set your browser to private browsing so the websites can't track your browsing with cookies. I've read they inflate prices once the site has got a tracking cookie with your itinerary.

I've heard the cookie thing, too.

I just booked us tickets (on Southwest) to go to California the weekend before Christmas and they were only $400 pp. We're actually sending my husband a day early to ABQ for his buddies surprise 40th birthday party and then we all fly to LAX and meet at the same time.

I've heard lots of people say that Amtrak is completely sold out for this week and that they're close to selling out for Christmas- even here in Texas where everyone drives, Amtrak is sold out.

Amtrak was sold out for us so we're taking the bus to Seattle. We picked what worked for our hosts which is a T-day arrival and a just after midnight departure on 12-27.

Wow - I had never heard this before! Thanks so much for the tip!!

I ended up buying my christmas travel tickets on "cyber-monday" after getting an email from Southwest about a special ($59 one way flights... yeah right! But I did find some that were slightly lower than the week before and just decided to jump on it). Maybe one day I will live close enough to drive...
