  • Vitamin d levels

So my vit d level is very high. I started taking 5000iu daily about 3 years ago. My vit d level is 112. The doc says that is the highest they have ever seen? Any spouses out there know what that means or risk?

Holy moly! Who told you to take such a high dose of a fat soluble vitamin? Yikes! Pregnant women are not advised to take more than 800iu/day and you were taking more than 5x that dose. Dh agrees that is a very high blood level. Too much vit D can lead to altered Ca levels which can effect your heart and it can cause fertility issues. You likely also feel pretty crappy. Stay away from the vitD and give your body and chance to recover.

Holy moly is right. DH basically just said what Pollyanna's DH said. It can also result in hypertension and possibly kidney damage. You need a serum calcium level with ionized fraction drawn, urine analyzed for protein or urinary casts, and if you have any urinary or kidney symptoms you need an ultrasound or CT looking for metastatic calcifications (which is not cancer, even though it sounds like it). There is research that suggests that any abnormal vit D levels can cause arterial wall damage, although its difficult to quantify. He also says stop the madness. No more vit D for you!

5000iu is what our dr's recommend to everyone Most people do not have enough. I just seem to be the rare exception. We see levels normally In The 10-40 Strange things is I feel great. Calcium levels are normal. My breast specialist wants the range for high risk breast cancer patients levels to be 70-80.

Do you artificially tan? That can increase vitamin D levels too.

Ummm, how can I say this nicely...that's just nuts. 5000iu MAYBE for a very short duration but never for a long period of time. Fat soluble vitamins are not expelled in the urine like water soluble vitamins are. Vitamins can be very dangerous. Dh also agrees with everything Deebs hubby says. He'd have all those tests run, make you stop all vitamins and have you avoid the sun for a while.

According to toxicologists, more than 1200 iu per day by supplement is a toxic dose.

Interesting about the kidney issues. I had a bad kidney infection a few years ago. Ever since then if I get a very full bladder. It is so hard to empty. Almost like bladder retention I guess. Very interesting I may need to talk more in depth with my doc she seemed to dismiss it. Told me to take 5000iu every other day. She acted like it wasn't that big of a deal. Yea I do tan ( hangs head in shame)

Was your ionized calcium run? It's not typically run outside of the ICU and makes a huge difference.

Or maybe go to a different doctor. I'm serious, get another opinion.

She is selling a toxic dose in her office?! WTH? Walk don't run to a new physician.

Holy cow! I remember having low levels a couple of years ago and being prescribed a high dose for a few weeks, but nothing like this. I'd switch doctors simply based on that, unless there was some miscommunication and she really meant that you should only be on the high dose for a brief period of time to get your levels up to normal.

I guess I just feel so confused. My ob/gyn recommends it, my breast specialist concurs. And the fertility doc knows and everyone is okay with this??? Dh acts like it is no big deal either. Am I in the twilight zone here??
