I was talking with a friend last night about gardens and I was telling her about this book because I have used the ideas behind it to really get a lot out of my garden last year. I didn't use his soilless potting mix because I simply can't afford it, but I did add some of the ingredients to my dirt to help lighten it up.

Last year I had 4 butternut squash plants that I trellised and managed to get around 18 squash out of them. I just froze up the last of them and have 1 left on the shelf in the basement. By the middle of summer, I had to snip the tips of the vines so they wouldn't keep growing, they had gone over the top of the trellis and were coming back down the other side and the trellis is about 8 ft tall (I could just barely reach the top of it and I am 5' 9".

And I used this netting for the trellis because it has huge openings, big enough to stick your hands through.

Good for you Kris, I wish I had a green thumb - I think we have the perfect spot for a garden, next year we'll have to try.

Awesome! I love the idea of having a garden, but I... don't really like being outside. Hehe, so I proudly support farmers markets!

Neat! It's so hard to grow anything in this area of Texas with the crazy heat and clay soil, but I'm going to try a small pumpkin patch and herb garden when we move. I've always wanted a pumpkin patch. Is it fall yet?

Ooh, I love having an herb garden. That's one thing I can keep up! Fresh herbs are ridiculously expensive, but so easy to grow.

you all are wonderful. I swear every time I even look at a plant / flower it instantly dies. INSTANTLY. Except orchids. I can grow, of all things, orchids. But I do <3 me a good farmer's market!

I'm going to check out that book, thanks for the rec. I badly want a garden but with all the wildlife around here I'd have to fence in everything. This seems like a nice way to start.

We have been blessed this yera w/ our gardening! Yes folks, you can grow things in the desert, IF you are EXTREMELY attentive! We harvest tomatoes & strawberries and get parsley, mint 7 basil as needed for dishes we prepare. God willing & weather permitting we will have green peppers, cucumbers, eggplant, corn , chili peppers & blackberries! One of our fig trees is loaded this year & we already have golf ball size baby grapefruits galore. Our various citrus should do well also! We also have a peach tree & are trying our luck w/a Loquat tree again(3rd one). Our grapes should be ready in a couple of weeks! I'll try to post some pic to this later! Grackles, fledgling Mourning Doves tend to go after our strawberries! Chuckwallas have come over our walls & nibbled on our vegetation! If it wasn't for the Owls, Harris hawks & Coyotes, I would be able to let our cats out to help w/these little garden invaders!

I have a black thumb. The only plants I can manage to keep alive are fake.

The only hope I have of keeping plants alive is that we do get rain pretty regularly here... Indoor plants don't stand a chance.
