  • Refrigerator Recs?

I'm searching old topics with Tapatalk, but can't see anything relevant.

DH wants a dual door, with freezer drawer on bottom. Brands that are good/ones to avoid/places to buy for a good price?

We have a Costco membership, if that changes anything.

    Thank you guys!

Do you have a Consumer Reports membership?

We have a Leibherr (thanks to cupcake), but it's HUGE and that might not be what you're looking for. By dual door, do you mean the french door style?

          Consumer Reports top picks are:

          Kenmore 7160
          Whirlpool Gold GXFHTXV & GX5FHDXV
Samsung RFG298HD (I'm pretty sure this is the one my sister has and I LOVE it - want one!)
          LG LFC2577

Good luck - that is going to be a must in my new kitchen!

I'd avoid Samsung and LG. When I was looking at fridges a few years ago (and washer/dryers) these had very low ratings when it came to appliance reliability (though they make stellar electronics). We have an Amana, which is the off-shoot of Whirlpool and quite frankly - it's a piece of shit. Electrolux and Fridgidair both come with great warantees and are well made products (we have the Electrolux washer/dryer and they're amazing), Fridgidaire would be my second choice) Whirlpool Gold would be my 3rd. We've have a Whirlpool Gold Range and Dishwasher and have problems with both, but they were easy fixes and we didnt have to pay an arm and a leg, though their warrantees tend to suck . Bosch and Miele make great products, as does Leibherr and other german made product, but if you're looking for relatively affordable - i'd go with the others (Fridgidaire, Whirlpool, Electrolux). Check out the capacity too. We're a family of 5 at home and find that we do NOT have enough capacity with the fridge we have - we have a 2nd fridge in our garage (that is standard capacity) and a deep-freeze. Sigh. I never though i'd be excited about the thought of having a full sized fridge only unit, but it's big on my hit list when we do our kitchen reno.

See, IMO, Electrolux=ElectroSUX. We have an Electrolux washer/dryer and microwave and all three have required repair in less than 3 years. Our LG washer, on the other hand, was phenomenal. I miss it. (we moved)

MsConception, we're a family of 6 so I was sure to get a big fridge. I almost got a 60" but thought it might be a bit much. Chose the 48" and sometimes it's barely enough. My kids are still pretty young so I can imagine in a few years it might not cut it.

We've had a GE for 14 years and have never had a single service call on it. My only advice about brands is if you are going with a foreign company make sure you have someone in your area that can handle the service call if needed.

I've heard great things about the GE Profile line and I LOVE my GE Profile microwave, its the one appliance we will keep when we gut our kitchen.

We have a Kenmore and love it! All of our Kenmore/Sears appliances have lasted a long time! We bought from the scratch & dent store and paid ~$475 for a $975 refrigerator. It had one little ding on the side.

We have had HORRIBLE experience with Kenmore, as in over 10 repairs in a year and having to call in a personal favor from my friends who work at corporate to get Sears to finally replace our brand new refrigerator. Ours was a re-badged LG. Basically Kenmore doesn't make anything, so you have to find out what each particular appliance actually is (and different models can be different, too). After that, I will never buy Kenmore or LG. I lost 4 fridge-loads worth of food through that ordeal - it literally cost us hundreds above the hundreds we had spent on our fridge. When it was finally replaced, we got a Whirlpool Gold, and I really did like that. We only had it for less than a year before we moved, so I have no idea. In our last house, we bought a GE Profile and I LOVED, LOVED it! So much so that we re-bought the same one when we moved here. Basically, my life's mission has become replacing side-by-side refrigerators with french doors. I'm thinking about this and realizing that we have bought a new fridge five times in the past 5 years. Wow!

Check out the Sears scratch and dent at Grapevine Mills. My parents have gotten most of their appliances there really cheap and you can hardly find the scratches.

Thanks, guys! DH is furiously researching this.

Now, he wants to know about washers/dryers. I'll go dig up the W/D thread (DCJenn, was it you who had a lot of info about the good/bad/ugly on this? A friend is a repairman?).

If you get something fancy I'll come over and drool at it with you. I'm craigslisting for an old electric set right now. No front loaders here!

I would happily trade front loaders for the old school washers.
