  • Broadway, baby

I keep hinting at my love of Broadway shows in other threads, and I thought it would be fun to have a conversation about it.

What shows have you seen on Broadway? If that list is too long, which were the best?

What are your favorite musicals and plays?

Off broadway I have seen CATS, Les Mis, and A Chorus Line. They were professional casts.

    Love, love, love musicals!

      Off Broadway (professional touring casts):

      Cats
Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (2 times)
      Evita!
Phantom of the Opera (2 times)
      Beauty and the Beast
      Mamma Mia! (3 times)
      Jesus Christ Superstar
      Spamalot
      The Lion King

Apparently I really love Andrew Lloyd Webber's shows, LOL!

I saw Miss Saigon on Broadway when I was a teenager. It was all sorts of awesome.

I flove Evita and would give my eye teeth to have seen Patti Lupone in the starring role.

          I saw Phantom too..

And Jamie, one of my oldest friends was in the Momma Mia traveling cast. She was understudy to the lead and got rave reviews whenever she had the chance to play her!

I've seen Chicago and Spamalot on Broadway. We're really hoping to be able to go see Wicked the next time we go. We were wanting to go this fall, but DH isn't sure about being able to take vacation (another story... grumble grumble).

Book of Mormon and Best Man were two of the three we saw on our last trip! I can't say I loved either of them, which surprised me. A local company is supposedly going to put on Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson next year... I'd like to see it.

I suppose I should answer my own questions. I've seen 10 shows on Broadway and two on the West End in London. Lots of professional touring productions and countless local productions. One of these years we're going to spring for season tickets to the touring season here.

              My favorites are:
              -Rent (for the music)
-The Lion King (for the awesome visual production)
-Wicked (for the singing and general over-the-top-ness)
-Caroline, or Change (for the excellent writing and creative use of music)
-Peter and the Starcatcher (a truly amazing play that has the sort of production qualities that remind me why I love the theater)

Seriously, everybody: go see Peter and the Starcatcher. It's on Broadway now and will start touring next summer. I can't say enough good things. Your kids will love it too.

I also saw a cool production of Company on Broadway where the actors played the instruments that made up the orchestra. I was really impressed.

Oh, I saw Spamalot and The Lion King as well. Not sure why I forgot about those two!

And Kris, Mamma Mia! is my ALL TIME favorite Broadway show. I'd see it another thirty times in a row if I could.

Off Broadway, in London and Chicago I've seen:
                  Phantom
                  Mama Mia
                  Joseph
                  Miss Saigon

We just got plane tickets for NY next month (I've never been). I'd like to see a show but I doubt its in the budget

Let's see, my first Broadway show was the Broadway revival of The King and I with Yul Brynner, I had just turned 8. It's nearly impossible to top that to be honest, I remember seeing it like it was yesterday. But other shows we saw on Broadway where:

                    Annie
                    A Chorus Line
                    42nd Street
                    Cats
                    Sweet Charity
a few others that I just don't remember the names of..

                    Traveling casts of:

                    Miss Saigon
                    The Lion King
                    Jesus Christ Superstar
                    Spamalot
                    Fiddler on the Roof
                    Nunsense
                    West Side Story
and other local shows that were wonderful as well

Definitely look at TKTS (day of) or broadwaybox.com (in advance).
