It's pretty bad around DFW. They are spraying in our (relatively small) suburb tomorrow because they have had lots of mosquitos test positive and 4 cases.

I'm thinking about not taking N on evening runs anymore for awhile--would you? What bout with mosquito netting over the stroller?

Maybe try taking her in the morning Fri, Sat & Sun instead of evening. I haven't gotten any bites on my morning runs.

DH has had at least 4 patients in the last month with WNV.
We basically don't go outside. If we do, we are slathered head-to-toe in "Bug Stuff" (I think Purple Prairie Organics makes it?)
Safe for the Bean, and us.

I've been meaning to buy that. The most recent case was in the neighborhood a few streets over. They are aerial spraying tonight

I wouldn't run with her, it's just not worth the risk. Stay in around dusk and make sure you have no standing water on your property. So scary to worry about your little ones.

Anybody know anything about the spray they use? People are getting their feathers ruffled because of the aerial spraying. Obviously we will stay indoors, but is there anything to worry about?

I just read a news article saying that the pesticide they are using breaks down in sunlight, but it is a good idea to cover sensitive fish ponds and stay indoors. Dallas just issued a state of emergency because of it, but I have not seen *exactly* what pesticide they are using, so it is hard to give a blanket statement of "it's totally safe or it's totally toxic" either way.

Thanks 13! From what I can tell (and pesticides were not my specialty) it isn't especially friendly, but that is to be expected as it is designed to kill organisms. I'd steer clear to the best of your ability (stay indoors and whatnot), but I could see why the Public Health Department considers it to be the lesser of two evils when compared with the known dangers of West Nile and the incidence rate in your area. I hope it doesn't kill a lot of bees (as many species are endangered). I could not verify the breakdown-in-sunlight fact on the info sheet. Stay safe! For mosquito repellent, I always had good luck with Avon's skin-so-soft on my exposed skin and DEET-type repellent on my clothes when camping. This was all pre-dd.

I love Skin so Soft, but found a cheaper bug spray at Whole Foods ($10 I think). Haven't used it yet though.

Anyone use that device that supposedly repels them by a non-audible sound? I got one at my baby shower and used it when we went to fireworks. I don't know if it worked though because we haven't had a ton of mosquitoes because its been so dry here.
