We have .30 acre, and loads of mature shade trees (oak and pecan).
We are trying to keep in mind drought-hearty, native plants and grasses.

Our backyard is basically soil only, due to shade. I have been looking at a native prairie grass mix to plant. Has anyone done a lawn from seed before? How do I remove existing weeds/grass to prepare?

Also, we have dogs. I want to protect our lawn-to-be.

I'll be doing all the work.

Have you thought about a run for the dogs or training them to potty in a certain area?

IMO, grass from seed is super fickle and susceptible to little birdies snacking (if it's just spread). How often do you want to water? Seeds take a lot longer to "take" than sod, but both need to be tread upon gingerly until they really take root (no romping in the yard )

Good luck! One of our stipulations for our "forever" home is a sprinkler system

My parents tried lawns from seed at various points when I was growing up. It never, ever worked. (Sorry.) They're in the high desert, so probably similar drought concerns. I'd get sod.

Also, our sprinkler system is the only way we still have a lawn.

Thirteen...I need to ask my mom. I think they did a lawn from seed a few years ago. They went with Bermudagrass. I'd wait until it cools down, though.

We did hydro seed which where we live is half the cost (sometimes less) than sod. It did very well and totally worth NOT paying for sod. Keep in mind we have a sprinkler system that is timed so we just had to stay off it for about 10 days.
