At home hair dye

I'm thinking about dyeing my own hair instead of getting it done in the salon. I only dye it to cover the gray. My hair is very dark brown with a very subtle reddish highlight. When I get it done in the salon, I just get all-over semipermanent color. It ends up slightly darker than my normal color and there are no highlights, but I don't mind that too much.

Any experience with the drugstore dyes? Any brands better than others? Any tips or tricks? My hair is also wavy, somewhat curly, so it tends to be on the dry side in case that matters. Thanks!

I have similar hair color. I honestly could color every four weeks because I have so much gray (found my first grays at 18). It's too expensive to go to the salon that often so every other time I use Root Touch Up in dark brown (I think Clairol makes it). It's awesome and so easy. Lots of times I'll use two boxes to be able to cover more roots and I leave the color on for 30-40 minutes because I have really hard to cover grays. Usually I can buy the boxes of color for about $5.30.

I used to use Garnier to go from light brown to blonde. I always did it myself. Use towels you don't like and watch closely as dye has been known to leap onto the counter :$

One of our members here recommended Garnier (permanent color) to me a few weeks ago (Thanks again!!!) and it worked great. I got the color that I wanted, and my ends are only a little dried out, but nothing that a little extra conditioner or oil won't fix. (Bear in mind that I've only had my hair cut once in the past 20 months!)

When I was dyeing to match my natural color, I used Clairol Natural Instincts (semi-permanent). I really like that, too, but it doesn't cover the white for long. Neither does permanent, hence me lightening my hair again. I haven't found any difference between salon hair color and doing it at home where covering gray is concerned...as in neither seems to last long for me. :/

Or splash onto the floor. And do it in your underwear!

Remove the bathmats and nice towels from your bathroom too. And be sure to wipe excess dye from your face, ears, and neck. Last time, I ended up with sploches on my forehead.

I dye mine about half a shade darker than my natural color (dark brown) to cover a few grays and get a nicer color. I've used the loreal foam and the garnier foam. The loreal was great but the garnier was terrible-- really dried me out.

Oh, we can get it here in IA Plus, no more dying for me...I'm far to lazy anymore. I used to dye more for fun/out of boredom. That's been replaced with sleep!

I use L'oreal because I am worth it... and because my natural colour looks more like a carrot than I would like..I darken it to a medium auburn....I have for so long that I forget what the real colour is now..

PS I tend to use Feria or Preference depending on how daring I want to be
