I didn't know how to say the sign of the cross in English until Kindergarten CCD class when the teacher re-taught it to me in English. We were not raised bilingual, but only mom was catholic so she just taught us to say it in Spanish. My kids get a kick out of it.

DH: "I was thinking I could take toddler DS with me *alone* to CA on my weekend trip in January [strictly to visit my ailing grandmother who lives in a SNF, even though I am super afraid of him touching anything and getting super sick]. What do you think?"

        Me: "...Hahahahahahaha!"

That's kinda what I was thinking. Let P have the pleasure of a trip with a toddler. I personally am getting palpitations just thinking about it, but hey!

When I was a child, I wondered how the little flashing arrow light on the dashboard knew which way the driver was about to turn the car.

Different pronunciations in Chicago. Roosevelt is Roose-e-velt there. And every year in my neighborhood there were signs for the "Woogms Parade," which dh and I called "wugums." .

That's how I've mostly heard it, and that's how the narrator and one of the talking heads JUST said it, too (I'm watching Ken Burns' National Parks series right now)

. Yeah, I'd never heard it pronounced Roose until I lived in Chicago. It sounded so funny to me, and I never got used to it. There is a subway station, a street, and a college in Chicago--all named ROOsevelt. Made me laugh everytime I heard it. And whenever I'd say it the way I knew it, people would correct me and say "you mean ROOsevelt--try it. Like rooster..."

Well, now I have a glint of why people think I have a Chicago accent.
