General Surgery

If your hubby is really interested, I *might* be able to gt him to talk to your hubby. He's not a internet forum sort of guy, but I'll see what I can do if your spouse is interested. I will tell you that his stock response to this question is that if he can envision doing anything else besides surgery, he should do it. This comes from a man who is ridiculously passionate about his field.

When DH was on general surgery, which he loved, he was told only do it if he could not see himself doing anything else period. He chose OBGYN because he still does a ton of surgery (and way more than just c-sections, he hardly even counts that as a surgery skill) but he's not completely entrenched in the whole surgery mentality. OBGYN ain't no walk in the park either. Horrible hours, but he loves it.

Get this, at one point he was having difficulty with Step 2 and he informed me that if he did not pass, he was thinking that it may be best to drop out and go to "mechanic school". I really thought he was crazy! Mind you, at this point he did have his PhD in hand. I asked him how we and our 2 children would be supported while he was in "mechanic school" and he informed me that we could live with his family. I politely told him that I would be supportive in whatever he chose, but he would be living that life without me. He quickly changed his mind...Boy the road I have been down with my DH...

If you want a Target partner (I LOVE that!), then anesthesia would be a good option. .

DH is doing his anesthesia rotation and really likes it! He is considering doing that instead of general surgery. I have been reading up on the info on it here and trying to convince him that is the way to go. I will support him if general surgery is what he really wants, but if we can avoid it I'm all for that. I think it would fit his personality and our family better.

this is also true for inteventional cardiology.

I know this thread is likely long-dead, but could you elaborate on this? Is your spouse in interventional cards? If so, how has that experience been for you and the training years and your current lifestyle. My husband is very, very interested in and already dedicated to cardiology (current president and M1 representative of the Cards interest group, snagged a coveted cardiology research position for the summer after copious amounts of research just to prove himself worthy, shadowing in EP labs, cards depts, etc) and I really don't see him changing his mind, although it is possible. In fact, on Friday he withdrew himself from the family medicine accelerated program he placed into upon being accepted into medical school because he knew family medicine was not his path.

Specifically he is most interested in EP or interventional, but isn't settled on either of those. But as a whole, cardiology is truly his passion. I am very, very interested in hearing more from spouses of cards specialists since this seems to be my future.
