  • Getting to know you question #2

Do you play any musical instruments?

I can play the piano - I just haven't in a long time. I also can play the bass guitar - played in DH's med school band, even

I played the piano for most of my life - started in kindergarten and took lessons through most of high school, plus a year in college. I don't play very often anymore, but I can still read music fairly well.

I played the piano for seven years. I love classical music.

I played the flute for 2 or 4 years in HS band too. I can't remember that exactly.

I've put my kids into piano lessons. Somedays piano practice makes me want to pull my hair out. I'm not as rigid about it as some moms (set timer, arguing, etc) but I do think music is as important to learn as reading or math. I've struggled with this as a parenting issue. Am I forcing my interest onto my children, or is it a basic skill that leads to a life long love and enjoyment of music? I'm not sure where to draw the line. I dictated the basics (reading music, playing piano) but I'll let them choose their own path as they progress. L wants to start violin this spring after four years of piano. I'm letting her add, not subtract at this point. Tiger mamma or music appreciation?

Sorry for the tangent. It's been on my mind lately.

I can't believe you were in your DH's med school band! I love it! You must post pics some day.

Piano, flute/piccolo, a little oboe, cello, a little violin, and guitar. This is what happens when you grow up with a music teacher mom.

I used to play the piano and still can to some degree and I played the flute for two years then switched to trombone and never looked back.

None of our children have wanted to play the piano but so far everyone has played an instrument starting in 5th grade. We used to require band at least through freshman year in high school but now have to rethink that because here it would mean the boys would not be able to play football.

I played the piano until age 15. I can still sight read music, but it would be painful for me to attempt a new piece.
I dabbled in violin for a while, and took a semester of classical guitar in college.
I wish I could still play the violin, and I also wish I would have made that my instrument of choice. I love all the styles you can play on the violin.
(Right now, DH and I are going back and forth about the piano: "We should get a piano." "No." "But it's a good learning instrument." "No.")

I played Piano until 2nd grade. Still regret quitting. Tried again in college. Got to Piano 1.5. That means I quit halfway through Piano 2. Also took an African Drumming class and a guitar class. Nope. Just not talented in this area...or not willing to practice.

I played clarinet for 15 years, and saxophone for four.

This weekend, I tried to play "On Wisconsin" on a xylophone (don't ask), and was heartbroken to discover that reading music is a challenge. It's been so long! My sister has my old clarinet, and she always says I can come visit it, but I'm thinking I would rather not embarass myself.

Nope, I'm the only one of the 3 girls in my family that never learned how to play an instrument.

Piano, violin, viola, cello, percussion....and I play a mean recorder, too! My main instrument is my voice, though.

GRU those are awesome! I wish I had more pics from when I was in jazz band in high school. I played bass guitar and I looked totally ridiculous -- the thing was almost as big as I was. You look way cooler on bass than I did
