Nope cold doesn't kill them. Nothing does but very high heat and DDT. Almost makes me want to say screw the environment and bring back DDT.

Anytime we go ANYWHERE now we check thoroughly for them in the room. I am moving to duffle bags solely and everything goes in the dryer when we go home. Residency interviews scare the crap out me. I have bed bug PTSD from our scare earlier this year

We just got back from Vegas. I'm surprised to not see it on the list--there are so many people from all over, staying 2-3 nights. So much turnover, so many places for bedbugs to hitch a ride and bring them in!

There are other treatments besides DDT. DDT is just really effective.

I actually got them while I lived in Chicago and my complex's pest guy treated with some kind of powder; I was rid of them within a week of getting them (the subsequent bedbug PTSD lasted for about 3 years though...I'd wake up in the middle if the night freaking out about them). I had a really minor infestation though. The only reason it was caught so quickly is that I react so badly to bug bites (and it was so huge in the media that I knew what to look for). They also continued to treat my apt weekly for about a year JIC...

ETA my friend got them traveling in Europe last year but discovered them while on her trip...she spent the whole day in a laundromat though...
