  • Jobs for surgeons with no call

Title pretty much says it all. Do these exist?

  • #2
I would think it depends on the type of surgery subspecialty....but take this from someone married to a subspecialist that has call all the time and all he has to do is think...so, I do not know much about surgery.
Finally - we are finished with training! Hello real world!!

On another marriage board that I am on, they keep saying they know doctors who work from 9-5 and don't have to have call because that is the way they have arranged their lives. I don't know a surgeon who can work at a hospital without agreeing to take call.

I don't know ANY full-time docs who are strictly 9-5, regardless of specialty.

I think you are right. I know someone that worked as a nurse at a one day surgery center. I can ask if they knew what thr dr hours were.
What about a job where he would be on for a week then off for a week? Not sure if that is possible for his field.

9-5? Definitely not any surgeons I know and I think we have friends in just about every specialty. Here my DH has to take one weeknight/week and one out of 5 weekends. All partners are equal and very willing to switch, etc with each other.
Wife to NSG out of training, mom to 2, 10 & 8, and a beagle with wings.

Have you guys seen those books like Porn for Women? With pictures of guys doing the dishes and taking care of babies? 9-5 sounds like Porn for Doctors' Wives.

My dh takes call one entire weekend out of 5 and once a week the rest of the time. And yes the other 4 partners switch around. But he still hates it.

Well, shit -- who doesn't? Unfortunately, it usually goes part and parcel with the medical crapfest.

They're called "banker's hours" and not "doctor's hours" for a reason...

My husband would be in heaven. He takes approximately one weekend (Thurs-Mon) a month plus two or three weeknights. But, my husband does not mind call. It's a great way to pick up caseload. We live really close to the hospitals he covers, though, so it is not super-disruptive or completely dominate his weekends.
