But kudos to you for being good about keeping a good inventory! You are wise.

Is it OK to confess that I read this thread with a sense of relief? I sincerely hope to never have to move again... (of course that'll jinx it...)

Jenn, you win for bad move stories. Hands down. Hope you don't have to do it again either!!

We submitted our claim for 23k worth of stuff, which I'm pretty sure is an underestimate. We'll see what they have to say in response.

That sucks. I've heard of stuff like that happening though. I think you've just made second place behind my Worst Move Ever.

They said that this hasn't happened with their company ever in the 20+ years that people we talked to had been working there. Apparently a disgruntled former employee decided he'd get back at the company by stealing the truck, and we just happened to be the lucky ones with our stuff in it. So far they've been reasonable with us, so I'm hoping they don't give us too hard of a time just sending the check.

Hmmm...our last move was with United. We loved them - until we discovered they had stolen ALL of our winter coats (including two leather coats DH and I had given each other as Christmas gifts that were probably the nicest pieces of clothing we'd ever purchased), and DH's watch that I gave him as a grad gift post training (that was on the kitchen counter for five min when Dh came in from work). The company told us those are not "theft items" and would do nothing for us. We had a thorough police investigation bc our local police wanted to nail them, but in the end, just made an insurance claim through our homeowners. I've never been so disappointed in a company that I had thought was doing a good job.

God, that's awful. I hope they make good on it and I'm glad you found your scrapbooks in the stuff that arrived. If Jenn's move didn't involve the death of a family pet, we'd have to hand over the worst move prize. And we've heard a LOT of "bad moving" stories.

(and we were homeless and had to move in with my parents...)

I don't know though, 23k worth of stuff is up there... Maybe we can be tied for first. (an award, by the way, no one wants!)

So, did everyone avoid Uhaul this year, or have they improved? I remember so many complaints last spring/summer (myself among them), but I haven't heard any this year.

We moved ourselves but used a different company. I can't believe I survived the move. I'm shell shock over the whole thing!

We moved ourselves with UHaul at the beginning of the month. We were moving 2 hours away, so we thought UHaul was the best way to go for short distances. It was a great deal - they upgraded our truck size because they needed them moved around, and gave us a huge discount so the total truck cost was around $120 + gas. Cheapest move ever.

However, the one-day move was hell, and we had FIL drive the giant truck so we could both drive our cars. Everyone almost dropped from exhaustion, and I can't help but think that the heavy lifting somehow contributed to FIL spending the next 2 days in the hospital... even if it was "technically" unrelated. If we ever have to "move ourselves" again I'm doing some sort of Pods (we did ABF U-Pack from MN to PA and it worked well) and hiring out the heavy lifters.

We did that for our previous move - rented a Uhaul but hired movers for 2 hours at each location. It was so worth it!

For the move to residency, we drove the truck ourselves, but hired movers on each end to load and unload. Best of both worlds and the movers were only $600 total.
