How are everyone's moving plans going?

This was my 3rd move with a large moving company, and the 3rd I've had problems. The first I didn't have much stuff, so they apparently don't guarantee that time frame, and I was without all of it for a few weeks. The second they stole a Wii and games out of one of the boxes. I want to never let my stuff go on a truck out of my possession again, but what happens when you're moving a whole house with appliances that really can't fit on a Uhaul anymore (that wasn't the case here, but when you get your move paid for, it seems like a good idea to let someone else do all the work).

OMG. Some of you have had some horrific experiences!! Our last move was as easy as could be (except when the moving truck drove over to pick up our stuff from storage, the lock broke and we had a heck of a time breaking in...that was a little rough). They picked up on a Friday and by Monday were at our new house waiting. They went directly there and only our stuff was on the truck which was great. I wonder how this next move will be?? They give us a window of drop off to be from the 28th-July 1st. We JUST found out that we will be closing on our new house on the 28th also. So I guess that is good. I am just sitting here in my rental all alone as my husband drove the cat and the kiddos 5 hours to his parent's house so they could watch them while we finished up here. Then they actually offered (get this one!) to drive them 12 hours to Indiana for us a few days after we get there!! To say I have the best in-laws would be an understatement. They rock. However, I wouldn't do that to them. I love them too much. However, we will pick them up and head to our new state on Thursday. Then they are still going to drive out and help us unpack and get settled. These parents have helped DH and I on every single move we have had since we left for medical school. Seriously. They have driven back and forth across the country a bout a trillion times. One time with a pick up truck loaded up with hand me down furniture (through Chicago....in the rain....) I had to give a little shout out to my in-laws. Well all....I have to sign off again to begin my final decent into our next relocation!! Hugs to all of you on your moves and

We have done 3 moves - two professionally (United & Allied) and one ourselves with ABF. We had NO issues with our United move, some damage with the ABF but that was our own packing issue and only a broken floor lamp that wasn't packed properly with Allied. So moves can be painless - hang in there all of you!

One professional move and 7 self moves. Exhaustion from the self moves and various tales to tell about truck rentals. The pro move we lost an antique mirror and had furniture damage to a dresser. But, that's it. I think you are more careful moving your own stuff but it's a hell of a lot easier when someone else pays for the move!!

I think it's great to hear "success stories" on moves here - good for you! It gives me hope that our stuff will arrive at some point and not be damaged! That's really all I'm shooting for at this point, so hopefully that will pan out.

We moved from NYC to Portland using ABF in 2010, and had a great experience. (Well, as great as you can have moving cross country.) Good luck, and think positive!

This! I was starting to have a hard time distinguishing this from the moving scams forum... It's good to realize that people have actually had successful moves

Stolen moving vans and kitten involuntary manslaughter are story-worthy (and boy are they!) because they're the exception and not the rule.

I think your typical move is still a painful amount of work, but when it's over, it's over. Hang in there, everyone. I think your sigh of relief is coming soon.

We haven't ever had a move go really smoothly, but we've done 3 professionally now, and the first 2 could have been way worse. The first we only had stuff moved (North American), and because we had such a small amount of stuff, it took several weeks to show up, but everything arrived intact. The second move we had packed and moved (United), and everything was perfect except the Wii and games that were stolen out of one box - in hindsight, we shouldn't have let them move that anyway.
