A dear friend just lost her home and everything in it to a terrible fire (a week before Christmas ... I cannot even imagine). A bunch of us want to pool money for a donation, is there a good website that anyone can suggest to facilitate such a thing?

That's terrible, I'm so sorry to hear about that. It looks like PayPal has a Fundraising option:
https://www.paypal.com/webapps/mpp/fundraising
(which is what I would probably use). Here are some others as well:

Hope that helps.

They take a percentage (4%) that's similar to Paypal's charge if you aren't a NFP.
We've used Paypal's send money option on here before. You just use Paypal to funnel the funds; all you need is a recipient's email and they can "collect" the donations by setting up a Paypal account. Then all the "sent money" lands in their account and they can use it online or have them transfer it in to a bank account.Angie
