I am trying to help my sister with her website, but I am really struggling with a few things within Wordpress.

Basically, I need to create a dynamic gallery of the items available for sale based on product category. I am unimpressed with what I am seeing out of the box with WordPress e-Commerce.

Does anyone have any experience with Wordpress?

Yes. Have you looked at woo commerce?

Yes and I really liked it, but i found the the shipping module OOB to be pretty non-functional without a costly upgrade, unless there is something I was missing.

The issue is that she has a wide variety products that vary in weight from 1 ounce to 12 ounces. Some stuff is fine to ship in a flat rate envelopes, but I haven't found a way to do the shipping in WooCommerce that worked.

I will say their front end is beautiful and fairly intuitive. I just can't justify shelling out more than $200 for the shipping module.

Let me look at options for you tomorrow. I have a developers license for woo commerce so I can install the pro version for you if it does the job. I haven't done many stores so I'm not as familiar with the shipping options off hand.

Angie - if you can help with this, I would be eternally grateful. Will you accept payment in soaps and lotions? Possibly an apron?

I can provide you the login info.
