Our furnace runs but blows cold air. Dh says he goes and resets it and then it blow not air for awhile. I changed the filter and made sure the carbon monoxide alarm was working. I guess I will be calling the owners in the am. And dh is being an ass about getting up, ur a freaking radiologist who is home by 4pm. forgive me for not giving a shit. .

I may not be using the right technical terms, but did you check the pilot light? In our last place, it would go out on occasion and we learned how to turn it back on. Hope someone comes out soon and it is a quick fix!

We had a very strange (I thought) issue a few months back with ours blowing cool air. Some how I ended up changing a battery in the thermostat and it seemed to solve the problem. But def if you're renting just call the owners. that's the best thing about renting! Good luck. Not the best day for heating issue!!!

Definitely try to change the battery in the thermostat. That's an easy fix. Is it a gas system?

Yep it is gas. The owner called and someone should be out today. The company says they are slammed.

Definitely try the batteries first. If that doesn't fix it, my guess is that it either just can't keep up with the cold, that the pilot light is having issues, or that the warming plate that helps keep the pilot light lit is going out. That plate is actually an easy fix of the HVAC guy can't get to you quickly and you're freezing.

There may be a small piece called a flame sensor in the furnace which sometimes gets oxidized and needs to be cleaned off.
It's a pretty easy process, only involving steelwool or sandpaper, and can save you an expensive hvac guy visit. Details depend on the model of furnace - you can google it.

(on our hot water heater, I went around in circles for months with this thing, and finally discovered that our gas pressure was low due to a blockage in the line from the street - had to be snaked out by the gas company. hvac guys were useless - they all had different ideas of what was wrong)

Heater guy left and of course it worked wonderfully for him. We changed the batteries, and the filter again and he said to wait and see. But he dislikes using the allergy filters and don't reset the furnace. The need the flashing lights for diagnostics. Should we pay or the owners since nothing wrong was found. I am not crazy it was broken.

My furnace stopped working this AM and I immediately thought of this thread. I figured I'd start at the beginning by buying some new batteries, per everyone's recommendation on here... and voila! One trip to the store for some AAAs later and my furnace is fixed. The iMSN brain trust saves the day again!
