  • Dialect Quiz

Here's a fun quiz from the NY Times attempts to figure out where you're from based on your terminology and pronunciation of certain words:
    http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2...-quiz-map.html

It nailed me as being from the Boston area, which is accurate. It's funny because no one would suspect that because I don't drop my "r"s or have any obvious accent. For me I think it picked up more from the terminology and lack of distinction between words like cot/caught and Mary/merry/marry.

I'm curious how accurate it is for other folks here.

I got Aurora, IL; Grand Rapids, MI; and Buffalo, NY. Aurora is the closest to where I grew up - cot/caught pronunciation and usage of "pop" were my two distinctions

I got exactly where I'm from. I don't have a heavy accent, but my dialect gives it away.
I'm just trying to make it out alive!

This changes every time I take it, none of which have been anywhere near where I am from. The first time I took this months ago, I was from Paradise Valley, NV and two others cities in that area. I took it again and forget what I got. This time, it says Overland Park, KS/Lincoln, NE/Wichita, KS. NOOOOOOOOO!!!!!! Apparently those two years in KS had a large influence

I am actually from PA but don't say yins or eat a grinder so maybe that's what kills me there.

So I lived on the east coast for most of my life and have been in the Midwest for almost 2 years. I got:

Colorado Springs, Salt Lake City, and Tucson. !! I've only even visited one of those 3 cities!

That's hysterical. Nailed me. Determined that I had most in common with Pennsylvania (leaning toward the western part of the state) and north-central Texas.

I was raised in Pittsburgh, but (having returned to the place of my birth) spent most of my adult life in Texas.

I got Rochester (yes), Aurora, and St Louis.

I'm curious about what other ways are there to say Mary/merry/marry? My grandfather lived in Boston half his life so his accent was pretty thick.

I took it a while back and my #1 was Madison WI, where I've never lived but is within 1 state of my two home states. I think #2 was SLC, where I've never been. I'm pretty solidly Midwestern but I've moved around just enough to confuse people. The only regional tics I demonstrate are Minnesotan. ("Ohfer heavens saaake!")

It said NJ for me. Which is where my parents are from. I pronounce Mary/marry/merry all differently. I think that's what pegged me to Jersey.

I got Amarillo, Little Rock, and Lexington (Kentucky). The first two make sense; I grew up in SE Oklahoma, so I was right in between the two.

I took it a month ago and got Denver, and just now I was in SoCal (Anaheim). Must be the planning a Disney trip.

My years in MD changed me from "pop" to "soda" and "ant" to pronounce Aunt to the pronunciation of Aunt like Ahnt...

Portland, OR/Vancouver, WA. Makes sense since I grew up 10 minutes from both.
